It seems to be that every time shane and paddy get written about in the press they get called the uk scorcese and de niro. Am i the only who finds that slightly annoying? In terms of style i can't really see the comparison, and even with content i think Shane's look at the things he brings across has more of a sense of humour than the man who gave us Mean Streets and Taxi Driver.
It would be interesting to know what everyone else thinks and who would be a good comparison. or is shane a true original? and why are people so quick to find an influence or comparision these days instead of writing or talking about new films? Maybe it's just boozed up film writers wanting to show their encyclopaedic knowledge of film. i think they need to get out more......

Scorsese and De Niro are probably the most explovive actor/director combination in the history of cinema. They've made 8 films together - four or five of which are mona fide classics. Trouble is, the press have to pigeon everyone with a label, so that they can feel intellectually superior to their readership - just the kind of "don't I know everything" condesending film journalism that gets up my nose, too. This isn't the first time this particular label has been given - it has been used to describe John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat, too. No the Scorsese/De Niro comparison is not justified. Yes they've made a couple of films together and yes, they have a non-professional friendship too, but this is where the similarities end. Shane Meadows is a truly original filmmaker and Padddy Consadine is without a doubt, the finest young actor that Britain has to offer - even better than Ewan McGregor, in my opinion. They are what they are and we should be looking forward to the next projects, not labelling them or their work. And BTW - Everyone know the new Scorsese/DeNiro is Scorsese/DiCaprio. These writers are bloody useless creatures

most arts journalism is so fucking lazy these days. some of my mates are in a band who got a crazy writer to write a press release saying how they met in garage over a second copy of a jonathan richman vinyl and literally every article about them just spouted out the press release.
bands like british sea power have a lot fun fucking up lazy journalists by inventing names and facts about themselves.
maybe shane and paddy need to invent some stuff of their own, perhaps starting a white stripes, are they/aren't they married media onslaught. they'd have beautiful if slightly strange kids.....

To disagree I feel that it is a good comparisson in a short hand way. I would describe them as the De Niro and Scorsese of uk film myself. For two reasons a) It is extremely flattering to their films and abilities to compare them to the stature of proven hollywood heavyweights and b) it is a good way to illustate a beautiful synergie of talent. and plus Shane is a big fan of Martin Scorcese. No they arent anything like them in style or content but its like saying that a football match is a David and Goliath affair, people just get it.

Plus to add a thing or two, I really dont like the Kill Bill-Dead Mans shoes comparison at all. I mean where do you begin?...

before I started reading the type of articles being talked about here I saw Paddy and Shane as the uk Deniro Scorsese, and I'd imagine it's a label Paddy and Shane don't mind, in fact I'd imagine they probably love it! I not only think it's a brilliant compliment, which draws a wider audience to shanes films but it's also fully justifyed maybe on the surface of things scorsese has all these elaborate camera moves, but mind you look at mean streets and taxi driver (with the exeption of a few shots) stop looking at the technique and content (in which I also see similarities) and start looking at character and story, the most important element in any film and one that both teams obviously focus on as for humor have you seen the Departed! I almost died laughing, what about Scorsese's mother in casino! when she's discusted by all the swearing, or Nickys character!?! both obviously understand that without humour you cannot make a true portrait of life and finally Shane himself on Mean Streets; The sense that the film was based in real, lived experience came as a revelation to Meadows. "It was obviously about people Scorsese understood and had grown up with. It was the first time that I thought, 'Maybe you don't have to make a film about a genre, maybe you can make a film about your own life.' Well... it kinda annoys me. As much of a crime it is i'm not a huge Scorcese fan, i like the films i've seen of his, but im not a huge fan. But thats not really why it annoys me... i just think people always have to be compared. Thats annoying. I agree with edmund
