the first time i watched this film was with my boyf and his two mates.
one of them had already seen it!!!!!!

i realised anthony was dead when they were havin the conversation about school and all the kids wanting to hold richard's hand.
anthony replies with.. i didn't......... don't need to now do i?
my boyfriend didn't realise till the very end!!!

what about you guy's?

Didn't realise til the end. It's not the kind of thing I look for in a film unless it's really obvious.

I don't think Anthony says "I don't need to now do I".... maybe he does, but I think you misheard it which then coincidentally did help you work out what was going on.

I always thought he said "i didn't need to did i" as in he was his brother so he didn't need to run around after him trying to hold his hand. I always found it a very moving way of showing how close the brothers were as they were younger. Also as everything anthony says is really in richards head i think it has a lot to do with the guilt richard has for leaving his brother as he grew older and he was remembering back to a time when they were really close and he could protect his brother.

I feel a teeny tiny bit sorry for anyone who gets any secret in any film before the twist is revealed. When a friend told me to see this film all he said was, "It starts off as a comedy, then turns into a horror film." That's all he said. No hint that there was anything else going on. Bless 'im. I had already decided that this was one of the best films of all time before the secret was revealed and, Jesus, when it happened... Speechless. Oooh, I'm gettin' tingles now!

When I went to see The Prestige I noted the 'Are you watching carefully' caption at the beginning and I did watch carefully. Too carefully. I figured out the main twist about half way through the film. Meh!

I'm pretty sure this IS what Anthony said. And I have the exact same interpretation as JT.

I'm glad I don't opt for that approach. I will speculate at the start but no more than that. That way I get the pleasant, "Oooh." when the twist comes.

Works even when I know the big plotpoint. The Usual Suspects isn't who Soze is but the journey to the conclusion, for me.
