congratulations to all concerned for this terrific win. "Dead Man's Shoes" was pipped to the post for this prestigious prize back in 2004. Good to see that justice has now been done!

AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT 62nd EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Edinburgh, Scotland, 29 June... The Edinburgh International Film Festival today announced the winners in the ten competition categories for both feature and short films. The awards were presented to the winners by EIFF Patron Sir Sean Connery on the closing day of the Festival at a public ceremony in Filmhouse.
Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film, sponsored by the UK Film Council
SOMERS TOWN – Directed by Shane Meadows
This year’s Michael Powell Jury were actor Danny Huston (THE KREUTZER SONATA, THE CONSTANT GARDENER) who presided over the five-strong Jury, international producer Sigurjon Sighvatsson (ZIDANE: A 21st CENTURY PORTRAIT); Orange Prize nominated author Scarlett Thomas (The End of Mr. Y); Golden Globe Best Actress nominee Joely Richardson (NIP\TUCK) and acclaimed director Iain Softley (INKHEART; K-PAX).
The Jury citation read: “It is a great pleasure to recognise SOMERS TOWN as the freshest, most imaginative, maverick work deserving of the Michael Powell Award. Can I add my congratulations Shane .
Now that you have taken Edinburgh by storm, I wonder if I can tempt you to do the same in Halifax, West Yorkshire.
I am Chairman of Halifax Film Society and would love to screen either This is England or Somers Town in our next season ( runs from 28th Sept 2008 until 5th April 2009 ). I love This is England which features surely the best opening credits ever in a film and the best child lead performance since Kes ( see below )
We are a film society with a difference. We love to do more than just show a film. We like to welcome one or more guests who have helped make a film when we screen the film and thus make it a very special evening. For example, last season we screened Ken Loach’s classic film Kes and David Bradley ( boy star Billy Casper in the film ) joined us for a wonderful on-stage conversation after the film. On a previous occasion, John Pearson, Pawel Pawlikowski’s favourite Soundman joined us when we screened My Summer of Love ( John had done the sound recording on the film and most of Pawel’s other films ).
If the idea of a visit to our film society appeals, can you please let me know asap.
Cheers,
Keith Rhodes
