Hi all, I've just joined here and have a question that i'm sure loads of you know the answer to.. I'm currently writing my first script for my first movie short. I have some songs in mind that i would like in the soundtrack, do i need to get permission to use the music? and if so, how do it get and how much does it normally cost? it's only going to be a youtube uploader of some sort. thanks in advance Shaun

I wouldn't worry about the soundtrack at this point. It's not important at the writing stage. Just keep them in mind until someone gets interested in production.
I know the BBC have a blanket agreement with the music industry so they get usage for nothing. Frankly, the soundtrack shouldn't be high on your list of priorities yet.

If you are just planning for a YouTube video at this stage, then I wouldn't worry about it... use the music you want. I mean, YouTube is awash with videos featuring uncleared music, and not alot is ever done about it. In the very rare instances where YouTube take action, they just remove the video. So very unlikely though. If you plan to make the video for anything else.... like public exhibition or to make money.. then forget about it. You need cleared music... or royalty free stuff. Some colleges have collections of royalty free music. This guy lets you use all his music for nothing... you just need to credit him: www.incompetech.com
