Shovelling crisps isn't license to be a cabbage though, is Shane's point I think. Don't just exist, live.
Way before he was ever noticed as a filmmaker, Shane was in court for nicking a breast pump. People today just don't have that same kind of attitude.

just joining in on the topic as a whole, not your current debate..
Doesn't having Sky+ mean you don't have to be on a fucking drip..? Its certainly the best thing In my house at this moment.. I'll spend 4-5 minutes a week picking out everything on in the week tht i want to see, then watch it when I want.. usually when i get in after being out and have zero else to do..
p.s. shane has sky+ im sure i've heard him say that.. contradictory!

I don't think Sky is the point. I was only continually referring to Sky for hilarities sake! haha
Sky+ is no excuse either. It's just added convenience. It's like being able to have your drip fitted without going to hospital. ;D
I do agree with fatself though... society needs people who just work and vegetate otherwise it would collapse. Shane was no doubt aware that most of the people reading an interview with him will be the kind of people who may have an interest in creativity.... so I see it as Shane giving that kind of person the kind of spurring on that they need. Perhaps.

I feel like im in the wrong now for liking certain stuff on tele.. ---- i understand the argument tho, but from my perspective, i selfish prefer it this way.. people having a lack of innitiative and creativity eliminates more competition..!

I stand by what I said and what I meant by it.
I do not for one second have any kind of superior ideal that what i do is more worthy than anyone else. What I can't stand is moaning lazy bastards who think that the world owes them a favour.
If you are happy putting cream into eclairs and watching big brother for the rest of eternity then that's groovy. But if you are towing the line but feel a great big sense of what the fuck am I doing with my life, then (if you do nothing about it) that to me is a crime.
It is pretty naive to read articles and take offence as most things are re-arranged for effect anyhow. I am not god, I am ex tealeaf who left school with feck all, But I broke my back getting to where I am at the moment. I come across alot of people who simply want a successful career dropping into their prams and think they everyone else whose 'made it' lucked out and that was where the comments were aimed.
It is obvious that there are different paths, Mine is Mine and yours is yours, the comments were not aimed at what people do but whether it makes them happy. My mum is a cleaner and my dad is a lorry driver, They are both very content, perfick!

cheers for clearing that up.
And just to clarify, I'm not content with working in a pet shop for the rest of my life...seems like my idea of fresh cherry hell. I'd like to explore creative avenues of work, as I assume most people who have a deep appreciation of your work do.
THOUGH, I don't think I was naive in my reading of this quote, and the offence taken. It was clearly in context, and you have just confirmed it sincerity.
either way, lets nip it in the bud and nip each others buds in a mass orgy love-in. My idea of making up.

A man went into a petshop and asked to buy a goldfish.
The shopkeeper asked "Would you like an aquarium?"
The man replied.. "I don't care what star sign it is.."

Trust Rich K to bring a real intellectual slant to the thread I think there is a place for it all to be honest. I work 9 to 5 and admit that I am a drip. Also my job is so boring that I feel that I may as well be on a drip. Sometimes I watch TV at night and sometimes not. Sometimes I read the Guardian but cannot ignore the Sun and Mirror and Hello and like to watch the Oscars to see how everybody is dressed. Also, like to do writing and arty stuff in my spare time but there is also a place for undemanding TV etc. Surely that's why it is so popular. Was this the point that was being made? I think it's good to mix things up but it's not crucial, surely people can do what they want. Carolyn x
