I've just stumbled across a load of info on the net about what tapes people use, some people are saying to choose a type/brand of tape and to stick with it because of the different types of lubricants used I just jam any tape into my z1 but have had loads of dropouts, think I'm gonna purchase a tape head cleaner and pick one brand anyway just thought I better warn everyone, anyone think this is just bullshit though??? www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.php?t=1744

HDV is the Hi-Definition version of miniDV isn't it?
I think you are wise to stick to a certain type of tape. When we run the Encounters film fest at work, each year we will have a load of films on miniDV to screen and invariably we will always get a couple which shed a load of filth (lubricant?) onto the tape heads in the machine. This causes drop-outs on all following miniDVs to be put into the machine. A swift clean or two of the machine is required with a head cleaner to get it working again. With it being a festival we are obliged to screen many of the shorts a couple of times, so we end up knowingly filthing up are machines with the same shitty tapes! Annoying. But at least after the first time we have the head cleaner ready!

Always best to keep using the same brand of tape in your camera.

yeah HD compressed onto mini DV, don't really understand how it manages to compress it to be honest
that posts saying that sony tapes use wet lubricant and everyone else uses dry, sony even changed the formula because the old one reacted with other brands, its scary stuff to be honest I cant believe I've only just found out
haven't used a head cleaner yet, I'll give it a go and see if I still get drop outs, just filmed my mates wedding THANK GOD the camera behaved itself!!! I do so many things where there's only one chance to get the footage and all I can do is cross my fingers!
why the hell are you not warned about this when buying the camera!!!

I use Sony! Believe it or not. Guy at Jessops recommended them. I hate Sony too, but I agreed cos he seemed to know what he was talking about.
I have never used any other tape for recording. Never had any problems. Well, I;ve only had trouble with Sony tapesd that have been recorded on with other cameras if you know what I mean. I've played back other tapes in there though, and its all dandy. I use a head cleaner everynow and then.
Best way is to use brand spanking new same brand tapes everytime.

Hey Gareth,
Thats an intersting article. I've never heard of this either, but then I tend not too get to concerned about stuff like this generally. I shot my uni film on HDV and actually used pretty cheapy mini DV tapes for some of it, and the more expensive HDV ones for the rest - all new though. Didn't have any problems, though I'll bear it in mind in future. Since I was using a uni camera that probably has every different brand through it each week, i'm kinda glad now I didn't know about this possible issue at the time. Yet another thing to worry about!
