Somers Town cracked the Half Million mark at the box office last weekend. Considering that Dead Mans Shoes only did just over 200k in the UK and this only runs at 71 Min's, is B&W and has subtitles, it really is quite staggering!
The only reason I am so ;D is that it will be the first film to make it's entire budget back at the cinema in this country alone and paves the way for 'Le Donk' to possibly get a limited cinema release based on the fact that people in the UK are much more open to watching stuff in the cinema that isn't simply rammed full of Hollywood trickery/pokery than they were a few years back (24/7 died a death in 1997 mainly due to it being B&W).
Somers Town really was never intended to be anything more than a short film that's main ambition was to find a place on late night TV or to tour a few festivals, so the fact that it not only got released, but has done as well as it has (with all of it's supposed handicaps) is nothing short of miraculous!

Shane i am Staggered that Dead Mans Shoes only did 200k in the uk cinema run . But what it also tells me is that you have build up a awesome reputation as a British film maker at the top of his career

Congratulations Shane. Said this before, but I was a bit surprised that Somers Town got a general, multiplex release. Not that it isn't worthy in it's own right, but because of the length, plus the B and W (all the commercial, 'this is what they want' gainsaying that goes on in the industry, stuff). Makes me think that post-TIE, 'A Shane Meadows Film' is going to be enough to get that kind of exposure. It's great too because a lot of people who wouldn't normally go near a 'indie' cinema or festival will likely 'take a punt' and end up loving your stuff......looks like you're Big Time now chief! ;D

it hasnt even made its way up to cumbria yet, 8th of october for one day only, I'd imagine theres alot of other places it hasnt even been screened yet!
what those figures show as well though is how well DMS and TIE must have done on DVD to spread the word, it must be looking all the more promising for gypsies now too!
