Not realy sure if these are relevant or not......but in addition to some of the one's already mentioned. Carolyn mentioned a Taste of Honey (1960) which is a remarkable film for all sorts of reasons, but I wonder (and say this in total ignorance of 1950s british films) if Jo didn't represent the birth of the 'teenager' in British films...she certainly personifies a lot of those misunderstood, alienated from her parents (or mother), rebellion themes typical of youth culture films. There's also a film from around '67 called Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (Mods). I confess I've never seen this one and it get's some dire reviews, but on the other hand it seems to crop up quite regularly in discussions of 60s youth culture so it might be worth a watch.
Not sure how your friend plans to approch his subject, but I suppose if he took the view that films don't just depict youth culture, but constructs it in certin ways, it would opn up a whole raft of other films...maybe even things like A Hard Days Night, which I regard as just a bit of a lark, but it has been read as a satire on the whole youth culture/rock and roll rebellion idea. And maybe would also include films like Sid and Nancy in as much as Sid Vicious's story plays out the nihilism of punk culture, but he can also be read as a 'victim' of hype and manipulation if you accept the idea that punk was not so much a movement that 'grew up' from the streets, but a creation of McClaren. Anyway, just some thoughts.
