I have just again watched Shane's interview about his childhood memory about the Disturbing skin head fight. it is found on the extras on dead mans shoes and i now see where Shane got the inspiration for This Is England, also he mentions the interview in another on the This Is England DVD Extras.
This is an amazing story Shane Thank you for Sharing!
i have sort of put what he said in to words.
When he was 11 his sister went out with a skin head meaning he had access to the group. He started to dress like them .ears pieced, tattoos. Ultimately his aim as an 11 year old was to go to prison. There was one skin head that Shane looked up to in particular that Shane looked up to as a father. He hung around with him all the time and kept asking about seeing fight and who the hardest men were in the town and who had the biggest reputations of which Shane became obsessed with and wanted his own. One night the skin head told Shane that if he wanted to see a fight he would take him to see one. He told Shane that he had a guy who called him a fat bastard and he owed him one and he told Shane he will take him to se the fight.
So he takes him to a street past the flats holding the skin heads coat. The skin head taps on the door, Shane gets all charged up ready to get involved if he needed to. So, a woman answers the door, Shane recognizes her as having Down syndrome, he could hear the television on in the back ground but what Shane really wanted was for a “big thug” to answer the door. And be a bigger “hero” then Shane’s own “hero”, the skinhead. But what answered the door was a Down syndrome girl hold a baby. For the first time in his life Shane felt that he was too deep, and said that he should leave it because he didn’t want it to happen because he had pushed for it and new he was responsible. But he could see in the face of the skin head that he was right in to doing it and had gone to far. But he asked “is your man in?” she calls him through and before he had a chance to get to the door the other skin head in through the door and “ban” knocks him straight out with one punch, the girls ran in to the house. Shane recalls the horrible sound of the punch of which he has never heard another like. The man was unconscious on the floor but that was just the beginning. The skinhead dragged his body over to a corner and balanced his head at a right angle and kicked hid face in for twenty minutes. Shane stood there frozen, not because he was addicted but because he had never seen anger like it. The girl ran out of the house screaming and Shane remained with the skinhead. He felt that from the instant the girl had answered the door an overwhelming sense of dread and gilt. The thing that stayed with Shane was not the fight but what happened after, the skin head goes in to the kitchen get a pint of water comes back and throws it over the mans face and slaps him around and is “dead kind” to him now “ Kev? Kev? Can you hear me mate?” the response from “Kev” was just a moan, “yea, yea I’m just going now, do you want me to turn your chips off and your oven? Do you want me to leave you television on?” Shane emphasizes that it is disturbing to have this incredible rage followed by this “bitter sweet” comedy. So, they both leave the house and Shane gives back the coat and pretends that he has enjoyed it. He also said that it was the hardest performance he gave in his life and the two or three weeks after that he pulled away from those type of people because there was something inside him that had been so disturbed by what he had seen and so repulsed by the fact that he wanted it, that that night had been the beginning of what he has become today.
