After watching Somers Town for the first time yesterday i was absolutely astounded at how similar the piece of work which won this festival award was to the closing montage of Shane's film. I shot my work in January of 2007 so there is no way i could have seen Somers Town before shooting my film, and every chance that Shane may have seen mine being that the films entered in this festival were touted around London and the UK for a whole six months afterwards at venues such as the Barbican and the BFI. I know many of you will be disgusted at the insinuation that Shane may have plagarised. I'm not claiming he did, i was just curious to see what other peoples opinions on the matter were. direct link - uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DwQqznbFqBQ

Hi James, I'd have to see the end of Somers Town again to judge. There are some similarities for sure, but a lot of film makers have used that super 8 device in that way (including Shane at the beginning of Dead Man's Shoes) and-no offence-but the use of music for the Parisian locations is perhaps something that would occur to others too? I can understand why you might think it though-I bet you're not the first person to enter a film in a small festival somewhere and then see something quite similar at the cinema a little way down the line! And I bet in some cases they're justified in being pissed off. I very much doubt Shane would do it though-he has too many good idea to need to and integrity. I would say though that I think that's a really lovely short film you've made there-I enjoyed it a lot and the music worked great (Edith Piaf). Look forward to seeing more of your stuff on the strength of that-again really nice, well done

Thats a nice little film! Can only see a few similarities though...
I also have a film similar to this I'm about to put into festivals (check the film making forum soon) I can't say I was inspired by Somers Town.. cos I hadn't seen it, although I knew about it. And also I hadn't seen your film. but I do think.. it is quite different indeed. Anyway, goes to show that films can be really similar, and not have any connections at all.

That is a great little short, and you can't deny there are some similarities. Looking at things the other way round I think people might think you were influenced by the end of Somers Town if they didn't know you made it before being aware of Somers Town.

Wow - gorgeous short! Well done. In answer to the question I'd say a resounding "no" - as per Jill's comment, I think Shane has way too many ideas to ever need to actively search for others. There's definitely a collective consciousness when it comes to creativity, it's been pointed out before and no doubt it'll continue to ever be so. I wouldn't worry too much about it - I haven't seen Somers Town yet but I doubt when I do that it'll detract from the exceptional quality of your own piece. Also, wait until someone else realises that hardcore eco-terrorists are the next Al Qaeda - that will seriously hurt me seeing as I have a very nice tight script based on that premise that I can't get people to read for love nor money. Doh!! And now it's out there in the ether courtesy of this post! Oh well. Likewise my idea for a film where this massive supposedly unsinkable ship hits an iceberg and sinks. Curse that Cameron bloke, if I ever see him he's gonna get what for I can tell ya...

Not on your nelly. I think you created a time machine and pinched my ideas. Next time you use it, could you tell me next years grand national winner and if I ever win the Palme Dor?

how the hell did you get a 16:9 vid on youtube??? nice film Youtube has changed today. Everything has a 16:9 window! Will be interesting to see what you need to upload to fill this new YouTube ratio! UPDATE: If you uploaded your vid as a 16:9 file then it seems to now fill the whole new widescreens! Check out the version of the Somers Town trailer I uploaded a while ago: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ibGXdDgaZE8&fmt=18
