Greetings Shane and all Members,
I've recently become a small-time actor and I'm new to the site after reacting to "This Is England" with a joy I hardly knew still existed in me. I remember having exactly those sort of fractured, passionate and lunatic conversations with people back in 1983 - it was so authentic.
Anyway, I have a story that I hope will bring a smile to Shane's face and those that love his work....
A few weeks ago I was at a special showing of Malcolm McDowell's film, "Never Apologise" (about his mentor/friend Lindsay Anderson who directed him in "If" and "O Lucky Man"), with Malcolm himself in attendance. Afterwards, Malcolm McDowell was interviewed prior to a Q&A session with the audience.
During this the woman interviewing him asked him what he thought of the state of the British Film Industry. "Well... Jesus", he exclaimed looking a bit distraught, "What is there to say? It hardly exists... I mean, I can think only of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach and... who else? There's no one else is there?"
Suddenly I heard my voice spill out of my face and say, "Shane Meadows?"
Several people in the audience around me shifted uneasily in their seats as though I was an unwarranted heckler. But to my surprise McDowell looked straight at me and, with earnest pleasure, said, "Thank you, THANK YOU! Yes, Shane Meadows, I've heard great things about him - particularly from my friend, Bob Hoskins. I'd really like to work with him."
You heard it here first, Shane! That's exactly what he said. He's the first to admit he's done a load of crap to stay alive as a jobbing actor since Clockwork, but I'm sure he'd love to be a part of some high quality, British output again!
P.S. Do I get an audition for your next project for the story? Eh? Eh? C'Mon, gis a job mister!
Tim
