Latest from Empire:
Meadows dream project delayed
Back in the dark recesses of last year’s Empire Awards, we brought you news that Shane Meadows was starting work on a screenplay for King Of The Gypsies, with Paddy Considine piling into the gym to play the titular character, bare-knuckle champ Bartley Dorman.
It’s something of a good news/bad news day for the project then. The bad news is that King Of The Gypsies is currently being held up by unspecified legal problems; the good that, while lawyers pore over the script, the prospect of a Meadows dream-team drew one step closer, with the ever-excellent Toby Kebbell (Dead Man’s Shoes) putting his hand up for a part.
Newly-nominated BAFTA Rising Star, Kebbell told us of his ambition to work with Meadows again. “I would love to play Bartley Gorman as a younger man. He was a phenomenal character - a ridiculous, animal of a man, with a head the size of a barrel. So hopefully we’ll do the film. Paddy will play him [Gorman] as an older man and I’ll play him younger, or Paddy will play him and I’ll play one of his brothers.”
No doubt a more brutal take on the bare-knuckle world than Snatch, a feature-length King Of The Gypsies has been a long-time dream project for Meadows, who made a short doc on the subject for Channel 4’s Battered Britain series. Watch this space for more as we get it. Phil de Semlyen

Companero passed this info to me secretly about an hour before your post! Only mentioning it because Mr Companero deserves some credit and it would be too awkward for him to big himself up! ;D Companero quietly passed me the info in order that I can look like I have it all under control and post the news myself. Well you've ruined that! Annoying film news that though!

My guess is that due to the popularity of Gorman and the book written about him someone is being greedy. It's a shame and must be so frustrating for Shane and co because it looked like things were finally coming together in order for them to get this film made.
Never mind - I'm sure our favourite Nottingham-based filmmaker will have something up his sleeve to keep him busy.

Oh man... I hope this legal mess gets straightened out so Shane and company can make the film.

I presume this is the same issue that shane alluded to before with some yank claiming rights to the book..? there's only one way to rightfully settle this legal battle. a one on one prizefight, winner takes all. do it on neutral territory, cuba or somewhere - get the cameras rolling for it, might make a nice dvd extra.

Shame about the delay. Nice to see Kebbell will be involved though.

Shame about the delay. Nice to see Kebbell will be involved though. I don't think that's been confirmed at all. I think Empire just asked him if he'd like to be in it just so they could pad out their article. It might happen though. Paddy said to take it with a pinch of salt over on his forum.. although I'm not quite sure which part of the article he was referring to.

Well, I still think it'd be interesting to get an insight to the younger Bartley in the film. Even just a little.

I thought It may be of interest. Its off another forum and I am sure the poet will have no objections.
Bartley Gorman-The King Of The Gypsies by ProvoRhino
A great warrior did live who was larger than life & Bartley Gorman was this heros’ name, His family to him meant more than life itself, for gypsy blood flowed through his veins. He’d fight men for honour or to settle a score,as his forefathers did long ago, He’d fight with his might,on a travellers site, and he always would conquer the foe.
Whenever bold Bartley, into battle did go,on his wrist he would carry a charm, For it brought him good fortune and guided his path, and saw that he came to no harm. He’d be there,he’d be ready in body and mind, sturdy as an oak,his fists knurled and burred, Though as strong as an ox,he was gentle and kind, and was always a man of his word.
Oh make no mistake,in those days men were tough, all hard fighters of that we are certain, There were men like Sam Gorman, Henry Francis as well, and the man that they called “Big Just” Burton. They’d fight with such savagery, power and pride, they oozed violence and blood with each breath, They’d never back down and they’d never lose face, and they’d fight with their hearts ‘til the death.
When they crowned Bartley “King Of The Gypsies”,the fighting world looked on in awe, It wasn’t a title held lightly,it was earned in “blood, snot, sweat and gore”,, He’d fight in a quarry,or down in a mine,at a camp-site,a race track or fair, As he stood six foot one,and weighed fifteen plus stone, with a proud flowing mane of red hair.
On Leger Day up at Doncaster,he was faced by a murderous mob, For they had been paid to kill Bartley, and came now to finish the job. But our hero somehow he survived this attack, for he summoned the strength from within, For good that day overcame evil, and those cowards must live with their sins.
But our hero was struck down, such a loss to us all,by a battle that couldn’t be won, He was taken from Earth,up to Heaven above, when to cancer he tragically did succumb. But his name it lives on and the memories survive,of the bouts and the fights and his ways, So much more than a fighter, for he gave us such love, and we miss him so much every day.
So Bartley we’d just like to thank you,for the joy that you brought to us all, Through your friendship, your kindness, your stories and songs, your tales to amuse and enthrall. For people remember the scraps and the scrapes, but that was just one side of you, You were caring and kind, with a strong heart and mind, and your spirit will always shine through.

I just checked that out. I'm glad to know that they're still just working on the script (and maybe thinking of bringing in someone else for creative input). For a while there, I was wondering if somebody planning a competing Bartley bio-pic was trying to stop this one from being made...
