Is there any more light which can be shed on the whole annoying Saxondale mallarkey? As we all know, Le Donk was devised years before Coogan got his twitching mug in on the whole 'washed-up roadie' idea. At the Edinburgh Q&A there was apparently at least one cheeky monkey saying Le Donk is a Saxondale rip-off... to which Shane replied, "It's actually the other way round." I would be interested to know how Coogan got the idea from either Considine or Meadows. Or perhaps these things are best left well alone! Coogan's got contacts!

I'm sure either Shane said on here or Paddy said on his forum that they showed Coogan a few short films with Le Donk in?

Yeah, Shane has said a few times (including twice in Edinburgh, to my recollection) that Coogan watched some of the Le Donk shorts and ripped off the character for Saxondale. Coogan and Considine worked closely together on 24 Hour Party People, so it could've been around that time.

I can confirm that it was during the filming of 24 hour Party People that Paddy showed Coogan some early Shaddy & Pane shorts including Le donk. To be honest they couldn't be any more different as characters and I personally really like Saxondale. Coogan did shamelessly use the core concept to develop Tommy Saxondale but I'm sure he'd never admit to it. Verdict. Le Donk came first.

As annoying as it is, its easy to see how him as a performer in that genre would be inspired by it. After all, we all have! "Don't tell Mommy I rode the Babysitter!"

Everyone rips off everyone elses ideas in the entertainment industry. I'd take it as a compliment if Coogan did indeed rip off Le Donk, there's no doubting his comedy credentials and Saxondale is clearly more than just the basic idea of an ageing roadie.
