I just noticed that Gavin's myspace page has been taken down. Anybody know why? It was always good to get previews of some off Gavin's new tunes and changed versions of old tune. Hopr it's just because he's regrouping.

That is really sad news. I hope Gavin is ok and can find himself in a place in the future were he will be able to write and perform. He's to good to give up but I guess that's for Gavin to decide. I wish him all the best. Thanks for letting us know Shane.

Shit... that's a shame 'cause there were some real gems on the DMS soundtrack from him... The Smith's cover was top too. Hopefully he will still write material for your films as his music has almost become synonymous with them.

So, I guess that means the album is off? I was really looking forward to it too.
Hope he can get back into writing/recording soon!

Did Eat Sleep Records go down at some point this year as well? Site's got nothing on it apart from two Gomez downloads, doesn't bode well.

For me, Gavin Clark and Shane Meadows go together like Spielberg/Williams and Leone/Morricone. Let's hope it's just a hiatus and not a permanent decision.

Oh lordy, I started crying when I read this thread last night. I don't know what Gavin's reasons are for giving up but I infer that there must be suffering behind the decision. I can only speak from my own experience as a writer and say that the more personal stuff is not easy or fun; the cathartic process is very painful. The entire process springs from and leads to dark places. And the industries that exist to cater for the arts - the music industry, the film industry, the publishing industry, the art world, are teeming with unpleasant, selfish, materialistic, grasping, unkind people. That is difficult to stomach as well. Regarding writing, even the less personal stuff can lead to dark places - I was subjected to an ugly verbal tirade in the middle of an art exhibition earlier this year by someone who through paranoia accused me of "Putting my mother in your book and devastating her!" (which was wholly inaccurate.) As I was being physically chased through the Millenium Galleries by this hysterical nut job, and ended up on the pavement outside in tears with my mates ringing me wondering where I'd gone, I honestly thought "Is it worth it?" - and I still think that most of the time. You've only got one life. Is it really worth all the pain and anguish to leave a body of work for future generations? I really don't know. So, I have the greatest respect for Gavin's decision to quit. However considering that he is, in my opinion, the greatest living songwriter and performer alive today, it is very very sad. And I feel very very sad that he must be suffering in order to have come to this decision If you're reading this, good luck mate and keep your chin up. You never know what joy may be round the corner. Hopefully in the future you may feel like writing and performing again. After all Iggy gave up for a while.

I was really sad to hear that Gavin has decided to retire from performing. I was really looking foward to getting his new solo LP , maybe in the future he will reconsider. He seemed so positive earlier in the year when he was talking about doing a solo acoustic CD of some of his back catalogue before the release of the new CD. I wish him well and thank him for the pleasure he has given me whilst listening to his songs and that wonderful voice of his.

Had an email from Ted Barnes the other day and this is what he said " Its not the last you will hear of Gavin, dont worry, we will keep him from retiring ! I am still not sure whats happening with Gavs solo album, it will be available at some point"

I was really sad to read this about Gavin. His music helped me through a horribly difficult time in my life and I hope that he will remember and be comforted by the fact that his music really helped me to keep going. I hope that he finds peace and happiness in whichever path he chooses to follow.

Gutted. His music touches everyone who listens to it so deeply it defies explanation. His soulful voice and melancholic lyrics cut through to the very soul. With so much tosh out there how can real talent like Gavin not gain recognition through music sales rather than fan forums. Sad sign of the times, hope he changes his mind and if he does he is suitably supported by his fans.
Please keep us posted of any developments and opportunities to support the living room/solo album projects.
