Oi Oi! So, just had to do this. We've put together screenshots of nearly all the characters from the film with stills from the series, and added a bit of commentary. We welcome you to come see and leave any comments on your thoughts. Put a bit of time and thought into this, and hope you all enjoy...Cheers! trumbullisland.com/pictures/this-is-england-1983-1986

Looks good, though I thought it was 1982 (shaun is 12, though 11 according to the dvd case ) and we catch up 4 years later to 1986 obviously he's leaving school after his exams, with the slight rumours of possibility of a catchup every 4 years? This is England '90 etc etc... I've seen a few people referring to it as being 1983 or 3 years later. In real time as per the film it is 4 years since. Is it not?

The film takes place in July 1983. It's there on the screen at the beginning, on the shot of Shaun's alarm clock and the photo of his dad.

Okay then, I did wonder. I thought it was four years later? So why's he done his exams and left school then? Now I'm confused.

It's three years later, I'm not sure why you're confused other than the DVD case. Did the original film itself mention him being twelve? Tomo was thirteen when they shot it, despite looking about six.
Nice site, by the way, wallytrumbull! Flip's my favourite character as well.

Hey WallyTrumbull, welcome to the site!
That's a great article you've put together there. I'm just about to go and Tweet about it from Shane's Twitter account.
I like the idea of the Teasing kid on a bike being the same character. It's hard to tell how much older the kid in the first film is compared to Shaun.

Thanks for the love, Dave!
And yeah, doing the math on the timeline is actually FUN!
Cheers again!

I always thought he was 12 in the film (as opposed to 13) and not 11 like the case suggested.

Oh right. I wondered if there was something specific to it in the film. On the TIE86 site, there's an interview with Tomo Turgoose where he seems to be confused about how much time has passed between the film and the series as well, but that might have just been because there were four or five years in between the shoots.
