Well, the foundations are in ... apartments ready to build. Must admit, am looking at Riber Castle through my patio window as I type, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it lit up at night.
Just win the lottery now to buy one !

What's the craic? The castle's still there but being refitted as apartments? Yeah. It's not a 'castle' strictly speaking, but a rather grand folly. It's been a number of things over the years though, including school, but now it's being converted into apartments. I was up there in the summer, wandering about taking photos and I was chased off by a security guard.

I was up there a couple of years back... Probably mid-2007. Jesus, time flies. But it was deserted, we had to climb over a few fences and stuff to get in. Such an odd place. It seemed like the last people doing anything with it (which I think was a zoo?) just ran out of there, leaving most of the paraphernalia. A bit like a vegetarian zombie apocalypse had been through. And that must have been a few years after they'd gone.
It was hell getting up the hill in the Mini, as well.

They have security cameras and the lot now. Alan Wright, who owns the place, wouldn't spare you if you were caught, so be very wary!
The castle is still as it was ... (the only reason we bought this house was that I could see it - and before that I lived on "Riber View Close")
It reminds me of my childhood as we had school trips there every year - even though we only lived in Tansley, 2 miles away. My daughters used to go on trips from nursery too .. many happy memories.
My sister used to live in Starkholmes which is on the hillside below Riber. She woke one morning to find a wallaby in her garden. Animal Rights had set loads of the animals free from the Zoo.
There is still allegedly, the Riber Big Cat out there .. killing sheep and parrots!

Interiors are prepared .. Windows are boarded up. It's taking time. I'll try and take a drive up this week and get some pics.

Have to say, I drove up to my mums who lives in Tansley and there was a light shining from one of the windows of the castle. Very exciting. Wish I were able to afford one of the apartments when they go up for sale.

Those pictures look to be about 1 year old Dave. If you scroll down the forum board the poster says he took them some time ago. I know Saffy's quite excited by the development, but I think its a bit of a shame. Riber Castle is perched on a hill top overlooking the valley that Matlock/Matlock Bath nestles in-you can see it from miles around (I can see it from my window). It used to be a gloomy/gothy presence, but now you can see the light reflecting off the newly installed windows Not sure what will happen to the old zoo and 'Devil's House.' I was up there last summer and it looked pretty much as it does in the pictures. I think that land is not part of the development, so it might survive.

No. I'm a right old Rublican miserablist ;D The weather's been too shit to go out though ;D Be a shame if the Devil's House has been demonlished. I was hoping that the land wasn't owned by the company that has 'developed' Riber Castle. I'd love that old zoo even if I wasn't a Meadows fan.
