I have actually gone bananas over this is england '86 ;D
I have been lurking here since the series started a few weeks ago, and hesitating over declaring my love for '86 (I hope it's ok that I have done here) but it feels like a big deal!
After seeing the last episode, I have been thinking about Woody and Combo and what happened BEFORE '83 (before we see them in the film) It feels a bit wrong to want to know everything about everything in terms of the characters and their stories (i like that this leaves room for another series!) but I was wondering what everyone else thought about what Woody might have done that led to Combo doing time for him?

There was a genuine backstory involving the theft of a helicopter or something odd.
I'm sure this wasn't an entirely serious suggestion, but it did come up in rehearsals for This Is England.
Unless my memory is messed up of course.

Tsk .. haha .. don't! I went to the Doctor yesterday. Mum ran me into town and I said "Let's have a coffee as my appointment isn't till 20 to 3" (I'd checked before leaving home)
It wasn't, was it .. it was 20 PAST two !

I think I read this somewhere too, but didn't take it seriously! it sounds like something Woody would be involved in, and i'm not sure he's the kind of character who has a shady past...? i guess 5 years is standard for helicopter theft?! |

It was said that Combo and Woody stole a helicopter and Woody swam away, but Combo was caught because he couldn't swim. Combo kept Woody out of it and took the sentence though.
Not that his sentence would have been reduced if he had mentioned Woody. If Woody was like 16 and Combo was a grown man, I doubt Combo would have served less time than he did for having a teenage accomplice. But Woody got away scott free.
I'd rather see Woody's darker side next time. Assuming he has one.
