There is a scene/shot in A Room For Romeo Brass, that I feel is one of the most inspiring and beautifully filmed shots ever. I have certainly attempted a similar shot, since I was so impressed by its power.
When Morell attacks Ladine's new "Boyfriend" outside the row of shops.
The car drives up and he jumps out the camera slowly pulls back as Morell is pounding and kick and the camera is constantly widening the mise en scene.
Its so powerful.
Morell jumps in the car and drives off, but the camera keeps moving back.
It really makes you worried for the other charaters about what Morell is going to do next. Paddy is excellent and the direction is spot on.
I loved it!

I agree.
There is a still shot that I absolutly love too. Its where Morell, Gavin and Romeo are sat eatin Ice cream by the sea. There is a side view which shows the curved tide wall(?) and the sea's horizon. Beautiful

I could never put my finger on why that attack scene was so strong but now you have pointed it out I understand, especially as you cant hear so well as the camera pulls away. Its chilling.
Paddy is great in that scene, just cold abuse.

i particually loved the very well framed shot of when morell was dancing in front of the grannies. i was so happy that shot was very long, because it was awesome to look at

Oh yes that is awesome where Morell is dancing for the grannies i was p!ssing myself when that came on was that just improvisation do u reckon if so Paddy can pull some funky moves out of the bag lol.

In fact i would go as far as to say the whole film is pretty awesome the best time is the first time u see it, I have showed about 20 people Romeo Brass now and they start off not really interested as it isnt including anyone they know but by the end of the film they wanna know what else Shane Meadows has made.

hello there.. new on here, so leave a few shreds on me  the scene, where gavin's dad is on his knees in the garden, romeo's old man (what's he called?), jumps over the wall and hits morrell with a lethal right hander.. almost feels like you're on the receiving end... |

Welcome to the site Video586. It's all pretty friendly round these here parts, so you can rest assured that your 'strips' will remain intact.
That bit you mentioned is class isn't it because the whole scene turns so sharply. Morrell having the upper hand over someone for very probably the first time in his life (where other adults are concerned) make the events in the scene shocking, and we get to see twisted lengths Morrell would like to go to when he's mad and has a compliant victim. When Romeo's Dad comes in with the 'haymaker', it's not just Morrell taking the blow, the viewer is also kind of woken from Morrell's world with a bang, and reality comes flooding back in.

welcome video. that scene is absolutely stunning, i really think its one of the best scenes ever put to film.
i believe that may have been mentioned, but the knife scene is well scary, am i right in thinking thats the first time we see the dark side of morrell? (i've only seen it once, its a crime) but yeah it kinda comes real unsuspectingly, and is very dark indeed.

Yea that knife scene is where you see the dark side of Morrell and your right you just dont see it coming it seems like they are having a great day at the seaside and that bang it goes dark!

If you're not sure whether what you are writing is a spoiler or not, then simply imagine you haven't seen the film yourself and that you read what you are about to write. If what you are writing would have spoilt your enjoyment of the film then you're about to commit a spoiler!
Anyway.... my SPOILER time:
Yes, the knife scene is amazing. It's probably mentioned in the commentary, or perhaps in a review I read somewhere, that the success of the whole film rests on that scene working.
I find it great in the scene, that even when Morrell starts questioning Knock, knock about the shell-suit incident, you can see he's genuinely annoyed, but he still looks like a bit of an innaffectual plonker. It's not until the knife comes out, and the foul threats that we suddenly realise that we as the audience have totally mis-judged the character.
The acting of both Paddy and Gavin in the scene is amazing, and really powerful. The direction is fantastic too as the camera goes in for a tight close-up of the sneering Morrell on a power-trip. Really puts you in the place of Knock, knock as he is drawn in close to Morrell for the barage of threats.

Thats a very good and fair point about the spoiler alert Dave and I can completely understand that had someone not seen the film and Ryd and I talking about that scene could have had an affect on there first viewing of the film. Lol will try not and do it again :-)
