My own wee homage

Hi everyone, first post and all that..

My first encounter with Shanes film came about 2001. I'd actually just started a film production course at uni, and was quickly becoming disillusioned with it. All the pretentious toerags whinging on about about the merits of Dario Argento. Anyway I think it was a friday night, and I was feeling a bit rough. Turned on BBC2 and caught A Room For Romeo Brass about 20 minutes in.

I've always been a fan of British film but this was just on another level (certainly pisses over Rita, Sue and Bob Too, haha) Anyways seriously I was blown away by it. It evoked a number of memories of the fickleness of childhood friendships and the coconuts that we would come in to contact with.

A wonderful film that I literally forced everyone I knew to watch and needless to say I created a good number of new Meadows fans.

As far as the film production course went, I ended up borrowing a scene from ARFRB in my final year film. We managed to cajole those pioneers of 80s tv magic shows Paul Daniels and his overly flirtatious missus to come and have a cameo role in the film. Anyway I borrowed the scene where knock knock surprises himself with the 3 pots and ball trick, so thats my wee heads up to Mr Meadows. Even had it shown in a kids film festival.

Shame that the stupid fucking hippy producer pissed off back to Bradford in a haze of tight leather motorbike trousers and cheap whizz to bother leaving a copy of the film for any of us.

Anyway, Shane mate your a genius. I was passing through Uttoxeter last year on the way to that theme park nearby, I was hoping I'd bump in to you maybe buying your shopping or helping an old lady across the road, turns out you dont even live there. Dissapointed? me?

ARFRB was what hooked me to Mr Meadows! Great film

Its what got me, led on the sofa one night ill channel flicking and I come across this film on bbc2 so started to watch a little bit and it was where they have the fight in the park, next day straight on amazon and got myself a copy for about £7.99.

Probably my all time favourite film.

as much as I love a Room for Romeo Brass, Rita and Sue is an outstanding film also. Alan Clarke is up there with the best of 'em in my humble opinion. Sad loss to the British Film Industry.

All the way through your post, I was thinking "Ooo hope he can put it up on the web for all to see!".
But then you tell of how the only copy was spirited away.

Yeah it was a shame, It turned out out pretty good considering the ballbags we had working on it. We went to a primary school and got a class of 9 year olds involved. Not the most sensible thing to do on your first ever film but it was a good laugh and they did well. We were using actual film and only had 3 10 minute rolls to play with, so when it came to editing we had to be a bit cute with certain scenes that hadn't turned out so well.
I've tried e-mailing the aforementioned hippy, but I think she is feeling a little shamed at having fucked off and not sorted out the copies like she was supposed to, what can you do? Apart from hunt her down and put her in a suitcase.

I've not really done much since, minced around the world for bit pretending i'm travelling. I'm looking at writing a docu-drama type story, influenced by a 90's TV spoof called Ghostwatch. (those who saw it will know it very well). It'll be about the plight of a young guy who's out the nick, and how he's trying to integrate with society again and stay off the drugs. Commenting on whether prison rehabilitates or not. It will all be very realstic and documentary like until a nice wee twist at the end.

Ahh Ghostwatch! Classic. Watching it again now, it still has a few spooky moments going for it!

As for getting a copy of your film from the theiving hippy, why not try an email that kind of sounds as though you aren't too fussed about getting it or not. Kind of ask about it casually... that way she may be more inclined to tell you once and for all that she accidently burnt it down or something! But you never know, a copy may come out of it!
