Bit of a dearth of TIE ’88 related news at the moment. Is it too early for our build up?
Your list of 8 greats and grates from ‘88 ?
GREATS
Perfect-Fairground Attraction A Short Film About Killing (Kieslowski) Launch of the Hubble Telescope Birth of the Simpsons (Tracey Ullman show )
GRATES
Thatcher (obviously) The birth of Red Nose Day The birth of Richard Madeley’s career Euro ‘88
1988 also saw the launch of Weird News, so a special prize (well, kudos) to whoever comes up with the oddest fact/story from ’88 ;D
In 1988, there were 15 cases in the US in which men were injured trying to get a can drink out of a vending machine. 3 died, the other 12 required hospitalization for injuries-fractures of the skull, toe, ankle, tibia, femur, and pelvis; inter-cerebral bleeding, knee contusion, and one punctured bladder. As a result, vending machines now display a warning label (The Journal of the American MedicalAssociation).

You should look at this from the parents perspective-I bought the wrong (secrets) keypers toy for Xmas! This was still alluded to in 88- and occasionally today!

Crossroads King's Oak (king's Heath/Selly Oak??) came to an end in 1988. The last, extended episode was on 4 April with Jill (Jane Rossington) riding off with her lover, John Maddingham (Jeremy Nicholas). Asked what name she would give the hotel she would be running in her new life, the character remarked, a little sadly, "I always thought Crossroads was an awfully good name". Not sure if that's a great or a grate Edit: The Comic Strip Presents also did Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door-directed by Stephen Frears. A great, I think!

8/8/88 - I caught 3 carp from the pond across the road from t'farm. 8lb 9oz, 8lb 11oz, and 5lb 9oz. In that order. Aged 14, I was interested in fishing, Jane Brassington, then fishing again, and I was at the height of my photographic memory powers. Been downhill ever since.
I blame lager.

I excuse myself for not having any more than one memory from 1988. Anyone with children will know that it's a momentous occasion, especially your first child ... Am sure other stuff happened, but it's all a bit of a blur.
