I'm still trying to work out what the piece of meat writhing about is or signifies on the overdose scene...
I cant make it out into anything!

I've only watched the sequence once (live as it was aired) and can't quite remember what was and what wasn't included. There were some Falklands images weren't there? I think I saw a flash of something horrific from that news/documentary footage. I think the shot you are thinking of may have been an injured troop.. perhaps a dismemberment.

I saw something resembling flesh or something and I thought it was supposed to be the inside of Lol's stomach as it was being pumped.

Sludge - this is a great thread title ! I mentioned this on the discussion thread and no-one went into a scene breakdown of this part of Lol's dire Xmas debacle.
I was a bit put out by the development of things in the story so that Lol walked around a lot on her tod in a long coat looking like she was in an over-rated Liverpudlian New Wave band from the 80s, looking all enigmatic and with badly dyed hair, then suddenly decided to lie motionless in bed with some abstract art on the wall next to her. What was that?! Maybe Woody drew it.
Again, I couldn't believe that Woody would still like Lol that much. That just didn't convince - Woody and Lol - sorry. Maybe I'm wrong, it's possible.
I'll note down the list of images/ shots in Lol's hospital Holby City sequence as each has its separate meaning and was chosen superbly. That sequence involving Lol, alongside the brilliant performance by Vicky McClure, was for me the standout of the third episode. Joseph Gilgun in fact was also brilliant and clearly Woody was entirely confused. It was clear that he had very fond memories of Lol and their whole past in the closing scenes, but I don't take that as a clear sign of a This is England '90 where Woody and Lol are riding around on a scooter together having great japes at the seaside with Le Donk and Scor-Zay-Zee. Sorry, I seem to have gone too far. Again.
More importantly, was that meat or a jellyfish?

I thought the use of that sequence of images was really powerful. The first time I watched it, ( after drinking a few bottles of peroni ), I thought it was some kind of 'life review' thing. Afterwards, I realised it wasn't. To me, it's more a series of images of the horrors that go on in the background and sometimes in the foreground of people's lives. I think all the images were 80s-Ethiopia etc and-maybe-the glimpse of Combo's hate face symbolised racism and hateful politics that was around, rather than being a memory of him personally. Although there was plenty of time to take in the images, the effect was almost subliminal. It worked on an emotional level, although it also worked as a narrative-I thought-mixing Lol's personal memories-some of which were those secrets buried inside-with stuff that evoked the decade. Try to image that scene without that montage. Less affecting? I think so. That's my reading on it anyway. I wasn't sure about the 'meat.' At first, like Carolyn, I thought it might be her insides, but having watched it again, I don't think so.

if you're talking about the first few seconds when her stomach is getting pumped I believe that's a snake attacking something.. (snake in the grass-reference maybe?) I dunno. Then again, with the whole biblical references made throughout it with the prayers and chants for Jesus--the snake could also represent the devil or there as "evil" .... But I do find it nice to finally hear the audio that was happening in 86' between Lol and Mitch (at least that's what I suspect a bit towards the end of the scene--maybe someone can clarify that?)

Yes, watching it again, and slowing it down I could clearly see the eyes of the snake.

I took the liberty of changing the title of this thread a little bit, as it contains a massive spoiler. Some people who go into the TIE part of the forum may not have seen TIE 88 yet, keep that in mind. I can't remember the specific image you're on about... but I think I assumed it was a shot of Lol's insides. Be interesting to watch this scene again closely!

The image in question is shown rather quick, but if you can get the pause correctly you can definitely make out the eye of a snake.

Just watched it again and paused it and I think I see what people are saying about the snake (although I still can't completely see it). Would make sense though-the serpent and the evil in the world. Also noticed for the first time how there's a refrain about love in the spoken bit, followed by a number of scenes of how Lol's experienced 'love.'

Well thats that mystery solved, now I'm trying to work out what the 'body in the cellar' is all about.
Gotta admit, Shanes use of historical imagery on all of these films is thought provoking...

I really liked the montage. It was kind of like all the things that come to your head when you're brain is on overload and the things that you remember don't always make sense or relate to anything - just your brain regurgitating things you don't necessarily want to see.
