Hi all! I am new to the forum and wanted to ask what may seem like a ridiculous question but, 'if you don't ask you don't get' so to speak so here it goes.... I'm currently formulating my dissertation for an MA in English Literature and using This is England, Shakespeare's Henry IV, parts 1 and 2 and Henry V as my primary texts for analysis. My tutor suggested that I try to get in touch with Shane Meadows to see if he would be willing to answer some questions that I have regarding this. Obviously I can give a much more in depth description as to what the actual premise of my dissertation is should this be possible. Shakespeare wasn't very forthcoming when I asked the same of him so I won't be too disappointed if this is a total impossibility However, it is not very often that when writing there is even the slightest opportunity of being able to ask the author/director of said text/film directly about his intentions or motivations and if I could do this it would infinitely enhance any analysis I make regarding my dissertation. I know I have been very vague as to what I'm doing, just don't see the point in going into detail if the answer to my question is going to be a definitive NO. So any info anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and hope all you Meadows fans are having a brilliant day!

welcome to the forum,
your best putting your questions up here and then if Shane himself doesn't get in touch maybe others on the forum will have input or maybe links to interviews in which the questions are answered.

Hi Gareth,
Thanks, I wasn't sure how much I should really say on here or not. So you mean I should actually put a full list of questions onto here? The things I would like to ask are very specific to Shame Meadow intentions regarding certain scenes and although I do believe that any viewer of anything should be free to interpret and encouraged to interpret things from their own perspective. I also believe that if it's possible to get it, a knowledge of authorial/directorial intent could only ever enhance anyone's understanding of the issues raised throughout any film, book etc. So the questions I would be asking couldn't really be answered by anyone but Shane (can I call him that! ha ha). I knew it was a long shot even proposing it. But if you think that if I put the questions up here anyway that he might answer them then I don't mind looking like an idiot for doing so! Thanks for your reply and your welcome.

also I have watched loads of interviews from the net but yeah I never thought about it that way, so if others have seen anything that answers the questions... cool, I shall get some questions together then!

your probably more likely to get your questions answered by Shane if you post them up, i wouldn't say it'd be likely but more likely.
also why not reach out to some of the cast, a lot have twitter accounts
