Hi, just wondering if anyone can give me some advise. We are making a short film for an end of year degree project and the genre is social realism. We need a girl actor of about 10-12/ northern who is daughter to an alcoholic mother. Ideally we would like to audition kids in care but it is tricky getting access to these kids. Can anyone advise on where to get gritty kid actors?
Thanks

I don't think you should be looking to use a child in care to play the child of an alcoholic mother

I don't think you should be looking to use a child in care to play the child of an alcoholic mother I have to agree there. It looks like you think that this will be a short-cut to gritty realism. Something feels very wrong about that idea. It's exploitation to some degree. I think you should be looking for a kid with no previous acting experience if you want to find some realism. If they've been too exposed to 'how to act' then they may be a bit unreal at this stage.

Maybe you should just set up a time and place for auditions in a 'gritty' area. Thomas Turgoose was famously inspired to turn-up by the promise of a fiver-and he turned out to be pretty good- so that'd probably help! Not sure, but if you find somebody, I think the parents would have to agree/sign some kind of release too. That or you could try a local am-dram society, but like Dave says, you might not get the naturalistic performance you are looking for.

What experience's would you like this child in care to have been through so as to get the performance your looking for!!?? My advice is don't work with kids until you understand the moral implications of what your proposing above.

Perhaps you should look at adults actors for the role. But ones who have a playing age of a lot younger. You wouldnt have to worry about the implications of the issues covered as you would if it were a child. Adult actors will also have more insight into the issues you are covering and may be able to portray emotions, etc you want. Not saying child actors cannot. There is amazing talent out there across all the age groups.
