For anyone who's interested as I know what a popular show this is, I'm on Come Dine With Me Sheffield All in One this Friday 10th February 2012 at 19:35 on Channel 4, repeated on Channel 4+1 at 20:35.

It's described on the Channel 4 press release thus:

Four amateur cooks in Sheffield compete to win the £1000 prize. Bohemian erotic author Jude Calvert-Toulmin's hopes of wooing her guests are dashed when telecom sales executive Robert Tingle criticises her screw-top wines. Jude retaliates on Robert's night by slating his personalised number plates, while student Lucy Croft finds her night is rather caught in the crossfire of Jude and Robert's ongoing feud. Finally, fun-loving IT boss Neil Goodwin's night features a risqué anecdote from Jude and a reading from her erotic novel. Hmmm...I thought they would focus on the bunfights! Although the bits about numberplates and screw top lids was absolutely genuine. There is nothing wrong with screw top lids, it's just pure snobbery to think otherwise, and I loathe personalised numberplates with a passion.


IRL though we all got on like a house on fire and have met up since. On Friday the others are watching it together at a warehouse in Broomhill in Sheff, but I want to be in a decent CAMRA pub (get me) so we're watching it at The Cobden View in Crookes if anyone wants to join us. The landlady, Laura, has given us the backroom bar which has two big TVs. Quite a few of the Sheff arty film music scene will be there so it will be a nice atmosphere!

The bottom line though, is after years of almost constant sneering from those in traditional publishing (long before Kindle exploded) at how I was a failure for trying to be an indy writer and publisher (believe me, these attacks can be vicious) I am now reading from my novel Mother-in-Law, Son-in-Law in front of 5 million people. Get in!

There will be an article and filmed interview with me about the experience on my blog and youtubechannel at 21:30 hrs on Friday 10th Feb after the Channel 4+1 show has aired. OK maybe at 21:40 which gives me a chance to go to the bar first before I click "publish".

The Everly Pregnant Brothers, one of Sheffield's *!BRIGHTEST!* *!HOTTEST!* bands, have released their Come Dine With Me song on itunes.

That may, or may not, give a clue as to who my after dinner entertainment was.

The Everly Pregnant Brothers are comprised of 6 ukelele players, amongst them artist Pete McKee, who hosted the Warpington This Is England at his recent Sheffield pub scrawl, Toby Foster, Radio Sheffield presenter, and Klive Humberstone of In The Nursery who are Big In Europe.

Will it be the first time you have seen the finished programme?
I wonder what the sarky voice-over chap will be banging on about... that's what I would be apprehensive about! haha

Yes the contestants don't get to see any of the edit prior to broadcast. The voice-over chap is Dave Lamb and his VO is scripted by the director and producer of that particular show although he's allowed to ad-lib.

Having Dave Lamb take the piss out of me was one of the highlights of my life.

Shame the brothers didn't make the final cut but their single is still on itunes at least and they're just getting more and more popular anyway, it's only a matter of time before they break into the main stream.

Oh and I became a best-selling author yesterday. Mother-in-Law, Son-in-Law went into the top 100 in both books and Kindle in the Amazon Erotica charts. Well chuffed. Although that was yesterday, today I've woken up to the news that Tyrannosaur got a Bafta which I'm over the moon about as well!

Do you not get to hear any of the comments from the others until the boradcast itself?

Some funny bits in there... that bit of you tottering around with the watering can was funny.

Florence and the Machine? Is that the heights of middle-of-the-road pop these days? Otherwise I don't know why that Stuart bloke would be familiar with them. I've never seen Florence (or her machine) and couldn't tell you any songs by them. But I did think that was your best look too.

It's a screw-top! Amazing that he genuinely felt that people should give a fuck about his own neurotic opinion.

So, what does happen in the bread kneading scene? haha

Actually Robert is a lovely person IRL and was very gracious in playing the baddie as a comic foil for me. We didn't discuss any of this, it was just instinctive. One of the nicest things about doing that particular show is that all the other contestants were highly intelligent and aware that this is an entertainment show and the point is to be entertaining. My husband and I went out with Robert and Lucy straight after filming wrapped on the last day - they're all great people and I've seen them all since, in fact we're all meeting up for a meal soon in town, and Robert and Neil are doing some business together now as well.

No, the contestants have nothing to do with the editing process. When it was aired on C4 was the first time we got to see it.

Thanks The director, Tina Tay, let us come up with our own ideas for the menu reveals and I wanted to do a Gil Elvgren/Carry On pastiche with the look, and Tina and, I seem to remember, the lighting cameraman, Charlie Barker (who was *brilliant*) came up with the idea for watering the flowers.

After the show, the book became an Amazon Erotica best seller

All in all a great experience, and once I've got my next two books out (which is proving to be a long slog as life keeps interrupting me) then I'm going to possibly pitch for a cooking show of my own, involving travel and cooking. We'll see...
