Hello everybody, I'm a student studying my second year in Professional Musicianship at the Brighton institute of Modern Music. One of the core modules in the year is Research Methods which is to simply research something musically that interests me and of course I wanted to come straight to Shane Meadows and map the use of music (both diegetic and non-diegetic) in This is England and This is England '86. I'm hoping to gain a career of being a music supervisor one day and I feel this is a great way to start. I was wondering if anyone on here had his email or knows someone else who has worked with him so I could email him with some questions about his use of music in This is England? I would be extremely grateful. Thanks for reading, look forward to hearing some responses Joshua Belcher

Sounds like an interesting project. I always forget which way round it is.. is diagetic music the music that is playing within the world of the film, and non-diagetic music the music that is added outside of the world of the film (as in the characters would not be aware of it)? Can't really help with contacts... but what sort of questions do you have? By the way, here's the website of Ludovico Einaudi who wrote the score for This Is England. No idea if you can find a contact through there or not. www.einaudiwebsite.com/It just struck me.. and I'm not sure if I'm right or not, but I think all of the Einaudi Score is non-diagetic and all of the 80s hits in the film are diagetic... although when Combo and Co are driving the pub meeting, that track Warhead might be non-diagetic actually (I don't think they are playing it in the car).

Hello. Thank you Dave Thanks for the reply. Yeah thats right, diegetic is within world of film and non-diegetic is what the viewer can hear and not the characters. I was just going to ask him what methods he took in gathering the music together for the film and his choices and also what made him go to Ludovico to use his pieces in the film. Yeah I created an account on that too. Thank you. Hope to hear something back soon Yeah some Toots & the Maytals tracks can be heard in the cafe with the gang and when Shaun is getting ready to go to Combos for that tragic ending he is singing 'Pressure Drop' What did you think of This is England '88 then?

There has to be some talk of this stuff in the archive on this forum. Try using the search function. It's a bit clunky, but you might come up with something.
I wonder if there were any interviews with Shane just about the music for TIE? Hmmmm.. can't recall now.
TIE88? The music or in general? I really liked it. Much more than 86.
