I have just watched 'Midlands' after four years of denial. I want to go back and completly re-edit it, replace every single piece of music and do an all new digital grade. I don't think it will ever win any oscars, but I can't leave it as it is. I will approach film four about alowing me to do a directors cut in exchange for a channell four premiere and limited DVD re-release. Watch this space.......

This may sound daft Shane but is it always like that, "I will approach film four about alowing me to do a directors cut" I mean cant you just do what you want with your own film or is it all down to money and predicted sales and shit. Also is this a one off because of the funding you got for Midlands or would it be the same if you wanted to do something with one of your other films?

I suppose Shane can do what he wants with it at home but Film Four are probably necessary when it comes to extra funding and distribution of it.

Once you have re-edited it, and re-laid a new soundtrack, your best bet would be to de-saturate it to Black & White. (24/7, Two Tears for Jimmy Prophet, and Where’s the Money Ronnie looked great) I think it needs an earthier look to it, and B&W would totally give the film a whole new look. (If you have enough of the rushes, I'm sure you could use alternative takes and deleted scenes and it’s a brand new film). If Film Four pussy about, tell 'em that you'll bung a set of shorts on the DVD release, and get us on this site to sign an online petition. I reckon that Midlands could have been great if they hadn't muscled in on your original vision.

Get Clayhill on the case with the music, top band, dub over moaning Murtle's dodgy voice with a real Notts lass (Jo Hartley, Vickey Mclure, Ladine Hall) then were in business.

I was pretty appalled by Shirley's accent. Fair fucks to her for being the only one in the film even trying to sound like they were from Notts, but it was so bad it was distracting. It's a shame, too, as she's a great actress.

Yeah I know, It would have been better if they didnt explain away why Roberts Carlyle and Kathy Burke have scotts and Cockney accents but are Brother and sister by slipping in the adoption/half brother trick.
Although I always smile when they greet each other "ey up duck" in a mock midlands accent as if to say lets at least have a go.
right actors wrong film.

Despite the negative comments Midlands has it's moments and the Sarah McLachlan track towards the end is used effectively. The DVD is worth buying for Shane's World and some of the rather witty deleted scenes.

I know what you're saying, and for me that's the only issue. I actually quite like the film myself, but as you suggested, it kind of feels like a more regular Brit comedy/drama film. I remember after I watched it in the cinema that I kind of got the feeling that there wasn't all that much in it that pointed to it being a Shane Meadows film. No doubt the big name actors had a big influence on this feeling. "I'm a civilian!"
