I remember at the time OUTITM was being touted as the third film in Shane's Midlands trilogy. I think it was just something conjoured up by the press. I think Shane is now on a pentilogy? haha

Suppose it's better than a 'Quadrilogy'... maybe that coud happen... "The year is 2467... Human life is devoid of any interest and people simply 'function' on a work-level... It's decided by Bulluckcorp (t.m.) to create a clone of the charmingly quaint yet psychotic and dangerous Morell to bring fun to a Space Station... with predictably disastrous results... they all get killed to the cries of "Wheatabeat" - the marines are called in. Classic line - "I can't destroy you today soldier - I've got a bad back" " N.

Just like to add my support for this film - it's only made to look bad by comparison (a bit like comparing Graham Linehan's really rather funny IT Crowd to the utter genius of his Father Ted).

for me it just sticks out like a sore thumb, feels like Shanes vision was either hijacked or not allowed to blossom,
however I think everyone agrees Deadmans shoes wouldnt exist with out it

I thought OUATITM was laugh out loud . It felt close to the heart in some ways, my mum and I thought the character Robert Carlylse played, hadn't really grown up from some stage he was when he left Shirley- (e.g. getting ready for Marlene's birthday and Jimmy was just messing around not helping)..

i recently bought the film on Dvd as it was on Sell in HMV for 5;99, i was a bit anxious in that i 've heard its not shane's favourite or many fans of shane's work favourite. So i held off wacthing it until after i watched Waltz for Bashir and Sexy beast both great films. idecided to gofor broke and watch it yes its flawed(Robert Carlyle wasn't great either was Shirly Henderson,The music sucked and it lacked the feel of shane's other films) but it had great things going for it and its a lot better then most british director's films. its a fine Shane Meadows film but not a towering masterpiece.

I watched the film again last night having not seen it in ages and guess what if you ignore the fact its a Shane Meadows film then its actually a bloody good little british film and a lot better than a lot of crap out there. I think the problem is because people rank TIS, DMS, ARFRB, ST so highly this one maybe doesnt quite rank as high and therefore it puts negativity on OUATITM unfairly. I could really see aspects of Shanes films in there and his comedy and even noticed him him as the bingo caller and Paul Fraser as the clutz with the microphone that hits Kathy Burke haha. IMHO it is a great little film that I even overlooked before myself, also could see it as a modern day western and Finn Atkins was a brilliant little actor in it.

I think one of the main reasons people tend to have a go at OUATITM is because Shane himself doesn't rate it. I dont think so many people would be slagging it if Shane had said he was really proud of it.

OUTITM was the first Meadows film I ever saw. I enjoyed it and forgot about it. A few years later I saw DMS. A vastly different experience. Over the years since finding out a bit about the story behind OUTITM I now find the film too hard to watch. I can see the pain on screen almost. Paddy was supposed to be in it. What happened there I wonder? If you could do the near impossible trick of pretending it's not one of Shane's films then I suppose it could be judged on it's own terms and seen to be not such an oddity. One thing that makes it hard to watch for me is the over use of the music refrain. From memory it's used almost after every cut! It begins to seriously grate. I do want to give it another go but I think I might wait for the director's cut...

Haha I'm good buddy just getting ready to shoot a new short over christmas which i'm looking forward to doing. In all honesty I thought some of your ideas and your humourous posts were pretty bloody funny and you should have a bash at writing a script, base it on your real life experiences like your posts and you could be onto a winner and I've the kit to film it

The major thing is that the other films Shane has done affect you as a viewer in such a massive way and OUATITM doesn't do that to the same extent, it doesnt leave you thinking after it ends. But that said I do think its a good film on its own, if you think of some of the british stuff thats being knocked out and shouted about you have to respect OUATITM as a film. I was watching the behind the scenes and did notice Paddy was in the workshops early on mmmm???
