The lighting in the film This is England was one of the many things that really gripped me. I love gritty, realistic and minimalist lighting and I thought the film nailed all three of those factors.
Too often when I watch films or TV shows I cringe at how fake the lighting looks and this is something that Shane consistently manages to avoid throughout all of his work. The TV series seemed to drift slightly and the lighting wasn't as consistently realistic as the film but even so it was still used much more subtly than most of the other drama series on TV.
Does anyone have any insight into how the film was lit, particularly the interior scenes in Combo's flat? It looks like all practical lights were used but surely this can't be the case. I love the gritty, dirty feel of the lighting which looks completely realistic. When Combo gives his speech to the gang and the orange ceiling light above him casts such a harsh shadow on his face it just makes me feel like I'm there!
Any insight would be great, Aaron.
