Channel 4 at 11pm. Set your videos if you're up early for work (for the benefit of all the Hooray Henrys out there, 'video' is Oldspeak for Sky Plus ) Also, Bob Hoskins - he who frames Roger Rabbit 24/7 - gives the performance of his lifetime in The Long Good Friday, on at 9pm on FilmFour. One of the best British films of all time. Watch it and see how many faces you recognise from The Bill, Casualty etc. Long story short: stay in tonight!

I've always meant to see The Long Good Friday but never have. I was bidding on ebay for it, but it went for £9, which I thought was strangely high. It isn't that difficult to get hold of is it?

Nah not normally, I picked up my copy as part of one of them 4 for £20 deals in HMV. Maybe the one you had your eye on was the special edition with commentary etc? Definitely worth getting though mate, wicked film.

Play are only selling the new special edition now (which isn't out until next Monday), so I guess the older DVD has been deleted?

Very possibly... to be honest (aside from the film) it's one of the worst DVDs out there. No extra features, no scene select, nothing! But the film itself makes it an essential purchase.
Hang on for the special edition - I hear they are giving away the soundtrack CD with it, which has always been as rare to get hold of as the Romeo Brass one and is a cracking 80s electronic score. Also, it'd be good to hear about the back-story of the film... especially how Bob Hoskins had to take the distributors to court when they threatened to overdub all his dialogue with a Brummie (no really)

I love The Long Good Friday! great film.
I have the dvd where the slip case is all black and the actual dvd cover is like a drawing with all the characters and car bombs and murders.

I watched Midlands again on DVD a week or so back, and saw some of it last night... I think it's so close to being a really great film. I don't know if it was overcooked or undercooked, but at times I'm really feeling for Rhys Ifans' character, and other times... I dunno, other times it reminds me of The Martins. I think it would have been better without Kathy Burke and Ricky Tomlinson, and Shirley's midland accent is atrocious. The problem with the film for me is that it falls between two stones, and can't decide whether it wants to be realistic and gritty or cartoony and broad.
Some of the moments in it are great, and some of the performances are, too.

You make some good points mate but i reckon Shirley's accent is pretty spot on in the film. The Midlands is a big place with a variety of accents (some subtle, some not so subtle) and coming from Notts where its set i reckon she pulled it off.....something Sir Bob couldnt achieve in 24/7 (but as its him we'll let him off) Anyway id say the Welsh, Scouse, cockney and Scottish accents in at are the least authentic considering where its set.... ;D
