Ages ago I was trying to find old clips of Meadows related TV stuff, and I got to nattering with Andrew Collins on Twitter. He used to do a late night TV programme with Stuart Maconis called, well, Collins and Maconie's Movie Club. Mr Collins mentioned that they had awarded Smalltime the film of the year and created their own award called the Barn D'or.
Now I've just stumbled across video evidence! haha Even if the uploaded clip is edited really weirdly. Collins and Maconie's Movie Club was one of the first places I heard about Shane's stuff. I think it was when they talked about it coming out on VHS. I never did see this Barn D'or award until now.
I think Mr Collins mentioned a while ago that Shane took a photo of himself with the award and sent it to the TV show! No evidence of that though. ha yet!

I miss film shows like these that were shown at some crazy time at nights usual a Friday or Saturday, like VIDZ on Channel 4 (with the Welsh comedian and Scottish Film Critic) and Moviedrome With Alex Cox and then Mark Cousins. Extreme Season presented by Mark Kermode which was great. Really during your teen years it was great to see films shown or reviewed that weren't that widely released. They should bring these type of shows back. Although I got to say I don't remember Collins and Maconie Film Club one.
I didn't know Smalltime was that well known at the time, I only thought with 24/7 is when Shane's career kicked off. I like Smalltime, it's got a charm to it that I thought 24/7 lacked although 24/7 is a superior film. Some of the acting is a little iffy (along with the wigs) in Smalltime but it's never off putting, just like Kevin smiths Clerk's the dialogue is too good to ever be overshadowed by the acting. I think Shane's performance is very good, by far the best in the film. It's sad that Shane's not got the rights to the film to give the DVD, some extra's like a commentary, deleted scenes, some short films. The BFI release was pretty damn expensive but worth it.

Hey scheevers... Got to agree about the glory days of light night cheap and weird programmes! Especially the film related ones. Having worked in a cinema since about 1995 I watched tonnes of these things and I do definitely remember watching Collins and Maconie's Movie Club... but nothing could beat Vidz! haha
I bought the Smalltime DVD when it first came out on DVD and I keep wondering whether they have rectified the problem with there being a couple of scenes that have a skip in the framerate or not. The one scene I remember having the brief stutter/skip is when they're all storming home after the carboot... all walking towards camera with kids screaming and Jumbo angered up and carrying the suitcase of bogrolls again! haha

The one scene I remember having the brief stutter/skip is when they're all storming home after the carboot... all walking towards camera with kids screaming and Jumbo angered up and carrying the suitcase of bogrolls again! haha Hey Dave.. Yeah a few Episodes of Vidz are up on Youtube, they hold up rather well. As the Welsh comedian goes off on funny rants while the Scottish guy brings it back by given his own quick review on the film. They mixed the commercial with the art house with the utterly bizarre but they gave any film a shout. It used always been shown between half 12 or half 1 in the morning after their fanbase usually students and young film nuts got home from the clubs . Moviedrome was always great, my uncle has them all on Videotape and put them onto DVD for me. Some great films were shown. Cousins was a little too serious for my tastes although he was great on the show Scene by Scene and his book and TV show Story of Cinema are great. Alex Cox was funny and tongue in cheek but if he didn't like a film chosen he'd say it but then say its worth watching for a few things. In Ireland, the one I grew up with locally was the Movie Show with Dave Fanning, used to be shown at half 7 on a Friday. He used to review the weeks releases and then do a on set report where he interview a big star. Dave was a great presenter cause he loved film. Although he probably didn't delve into World or art house cinema too much.
BFI releases can be very dodgy in terms of picture quality and extras, got my Akira Kurosawa box set a few years back, pretty expensive at 180 Euro with 7 of his films but Kurosawa work is worth the price alone. But the quality of his masterpieces Throne of Blood and Seven Samurai were awful, really took away the enjoyment of the films. Had to get American releases from the Critrition Collection, which were amazing with a ton of extras and the picture and sound quality were amazing. My DVD of Smalltime is good, no skips but maybe I have to look at it closer. Shane's work is one of the few directors I pay over the price for but the lack of really any good extras is a bit of a let down considering the price BFI expect you to pay.
