Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of watching Gavin perform live, but his music, whether solo or with Sunhouse, Clayhill or Unkle, has always resonated with me and will continue to do so. I watched The Living Room last week and he seemed like an absolute gem of a man. Something that has been backed up by the tributes of people who knew him much, much better than myself.
I also wanted to mention that I watched Paddy's band, Riding The Low, in Burton on Saturday night. Their set featured a touching tribute to Gavin - Paddy spoke about him briefly and they welcomed Sunhouse drummer Dominic Dillon onto the stage to play "Monkey Dead" with the band. A really nice moment and something that I feel sure everyone linked with Gavin would have appreciated.

Sounds like an amazing moment at the Riding The Low gig. Monkey Dead was an instant favourite of mine the instant I heard it in Twentyfour Seven!
I was trying to recall what my first encounter with Gavin's music would have been, and it must have been the Smalltime soundtrack. I can't claim that I saw Shane's films from the very beginning, but when Twentyfour Seven was released, I loved the look of it from TV clips but annoyingly it wasn't screening anywhere near me. That lead me to hunt out other work by this Shane Meadows, and it turned out that Smalltime was the only other film, and it was out on VHS! So off I went and bought it!

I was trying to recall what my first encounter with Gavin's music would have been, and it must have been the Smalltime soundtrack. I first saw Gavin playing with Sunhouse at the St Malo festival in 1998. I'd gone over ligging with the band 'The Catchers' (who were on just before them as I recall) and stood at the side of the stage watching them with Gomez (my band, 'Electrascope', shared the same sound engineer, Dave Hadley) and Colin Greenwood. I didn't initially make the connection with 'Small Time' - which I too had on VHS after taping it off the telly, becoming a firm favourite in Chez Tel - but I thought they were great. Of course, as time has passed, and Shane's back-catalogue has grown, I've kept tabs on Gavin's music. For me, they'll always be inextricably linked. For Shane, as well as all those that knew Gavin personally of course, the pain must be unbearable. I've not had a chance to watch 'The Living Room' yet, but I'm sure it will be as honest as Shane's films, and Gavin's music, have always been. My sincerest condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.

This was the last time I saw Gavin. Dublin 2014. He gave me the shoes that had been given to him by the sponsor of the gig. Great memories.

I wrote to NME over 2 weeks ago and my 14 year old daughter has also been emailing them. Finally, today they published my letter about Gavin. I've also posted a copy of it to Gavin's Facebook page. Still can't quite believe he's gone.
