Why is this so? How can we combat it? What does it mean for the everyday experiences of working class people when the portrayal of them comes from a middle class perspective?

It would be great if they brought back the youth service/youth clubs. I used to be a youth worker before they got shut down. We ran all sorts of projects with organisations in the arts sector. I think lack of time due to working long hours because of high cost of living and low wages doesn't help, and of course lack of money, to access the arts. I wrote and illustrated children's books when I was 13 & 14, and then did nothing with them due to working 70 weeks and self esteem. I have recently redone the books and have a publisher interested in them. If I had, had the time to continue back then and not been categorised at school just for being dyslexic, and working class I may have done this earlier.
