ITs great! I love it. Me and a mate so totally ripped it off for a first year college film! Infact its what got me into Shanes films, he showed it me on a VHS he had of Smalltime that he stole from an old lectuerer of his!
We should talk about it more!

Oddly... I think it must have been the first Shane Meadows thing that Isaw too. This is thanks to the fact that none of the local cinemas screened 24-7 (which I had seen reviewed on TV)... so I had a look to see if this Shane Meadows had already any other films out to buy. Found Smalltime VHS, and so I must have seen Where's the Money Ronnie? first.
It is great fun. I always enjoy the fact that at the end of Jock's bit, when it fades to black, you just get a quick glimpse of the actor mugging at the camera (as in relief that the scene is over or something).

Shane, I'd like to see the ORIGINAL version of Where's The Money Ronnie? again. I remember seeing this in a terrace house in Nottingham when we were all students. Was it Andrea's house? Or next door? When I saw Where's The Money Ronnie? was to be screened at my local cinema here in Brisbane, Australia, even my husband got excited, thinking it was the film I had been ranting and raving about for a few years. It's not the same film, though. That original version has stayed with me. Shane wrote, directed, edited, added the music, operated the camera AND starred in the film. Sound impossible? It was great!

When I compiled the list of short films for the site, I wondered what the earlier versions of Where's The Money, Ronnie? were like.
It would be of great interest if you could describe the version you saw a bit more Mandy. Was it exactly the same story?

G'day Dave,
As far as my memory serves me, no, the story is not the same at all. When I say that Shane starred in it, I mean he was the ONLY star. There were no other actors!! There were two scenes that really made an impression on me. One was a fight scene with two blokes strangling each other (or at least one strangling the other!) on the ground. Shane not only played both parts, he also filmed the whole thing with a hand-held camera. So, that's Shane filming himself fighting with himself, all on a hand-held camera. The other scene I loved was a man (wrapped in a sleeping-bag, I think) falling out of a first-floor window. The film cut from colour to grainy black-and-white and went into silent slow motion. The scene really stood out as being highly emotive. In a second I went from laughing my head off to stunned silence with the hairs standing up on the back of my neck.
I watched the film a few times, and Shane and I had a good old chat about it; what seemingly inane objects he'd placed with great precision in the scenes, and how he'd managed to be actor, director, writer, producer, camera-man, editor, etc., etc. By this time the rest of the household had lost interest, thinking Shane was just some git with a camera, but I clearly remember feeling sure he'd make it. The film blew me away. He is a man with some vision.
Mandy.

Hi Mandy, I can't believe you remeber the film in such detail after all these years.
Are you based in OZ now?
I am just in the process of putting a dvd together of those early films. I will gladly send you one. Get back in touch (private message) and I'll get one out to you in the next few weeks.
It's really nice to hear from you again, I'm over the moon that my early films had such an effect. As you said, most people thought I was the new Jeremy Beadle rather than the new Scorssese.

First Shane Meadows experience was WTMR for me too. Watched a dodgy old VHS copy at my brother's in Radford about 10 years ago. Fuckucking brilliant!

Not sure if this link has been posted before? If anybody on site is interested, you can download Where's the Money Ronnie from the BFI website: www.7digital.com/stores/productDetail.aspx?shop=286&product=78498&sid=1275016It's £3.95, so maybe a bit expensive if -like me-you're hoping it'll be included on the Smalltime DVD. Long time since I've seen this, but I remember it was very funny-'even a money collector's got to have a jingle' ;D Anyway, it's there if you want it.

Watched this finally! Thanks to Love Film. Thought it was great. I also noticed that guy looking into the camera in the fade out! Amusing!
I'd like to see these alternate versions very much indeed.
