Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. I just have one burning question today. I've not been lucky enough to watch the documentary on Bartley Gorman that Shane made some time ago, although I've read the book about Bartley ,King of The Gypsies, several times. I've heard that a film might be in the pipeline about Bartley Gormans life. Is there any news on this?

as far as I know mate, shane mentioned in all the 'this is england' publicity that in a perfect world, ie if he could get the necessary funding to do it justice, that 'King of the Gypsies' would be the next major project he would work on.....don't think there's been any decision made public either way, but then what do I know....?
you a bare knuckle fan yourself then....?

I watched the Doco you speak of the other day. It is superb, very interesting and moving. I cannot say how good this movie could be, shane's heart is really in it and i think it could be absolutely groundbreaking.
I'm pretty sure TIE is a financial success right? and it will certainly continue to do well on DVD like DMS has. Ithink shane may be able to do it sooner then later to be honest. but maybe thats just wishful thinking.
Anyway, whenever it comes its something very big to look forward to. And i'm sure it will be nothing short of amazing.

ha ha. I've mentioned it before, but shane came to my college in 2004 to promote dead man's shoes and talk to us about making short films. He showed us five of his: Gary Wilkinson Northern Soul Macca's Men King Of The Gypsies Three Tears For Jimmy Prophet I remember the day so well! I had just watched 24/7 so i felt like i was worthy to like listen to shane meadows. I'd been blown away by that film, and then i was truely inspired by his short films. Shane gave a copy of them on VHS to my college (Long Road) they kept it, and when i got a job in the media dept in 2005 i found the tape, and we had this VHS to DVD copier thingy. So being a big meadows fan i copied it onto a DVD for myself! I'd love for other people to see it, but i reckon we'd need shane permission, i feel a bit cheeky copying it in the first place! I also have the full interview he did with my teacher on DV tape somewhere. Its really interesting, a lot about Midlands, and DMS, also good advice on short film making. My film teacher/collegue always remembers when Shane said to him "where's your toilet buddy? I had a massive curry last night!" ha ha. or something along those lines! brilliant.

Oooh! That miniDV of the interview sounds ace! Dig that mother out! Gary Wilkinson! Oh yeah.. I recall you mentioning that one ages ago. Is it not on the shorts page at all? I can't recall if it used to be on the shorts page on the old site or not now. Maybe it got lost in the rebuilding process. I don't know which year it's from, and have never seen it sadly. Anyway.. if you find that mini DV, I'd love to get it on YouTube.... unless you want to up it. My YouTube account has 32 subscribers don't you know! hehe

Also i THINK its longer than 10 mins so it may have to be uploaded in two parts. I'll try and get it uploaded though soon as poss. As for the DVD I have shall we ask Shane if we can copy it for a few hardcore members? If you're reading this Shane, can I?! ha ha. I wouldn't wanna do it without permission.

The 32 subscribers are almost certainly all subscribing because of all the Meadows based videos I have uploaded. Competition eh? Could be good... but there's still that other madness still lingering in the TIE board. It always seemed like a mad idea to me, they should have talked to me first! ;D If I had had anything to do with, the weigh in would have happened before the competition was announced!

Yeah i was only jokin with ya Dave! But to be honest i reckon a lot have subscribed due to WSM and the Bath Abbey videos, they've got a lot of appeal! I'll send the tape to you as well though Dave, so more people can see it as it were.
Ha ha, well we'll wait untill theres a competition drought!

Hi people, thanks for the responses. Let's hope the film gets under way some time soonish. Haven't been on here for a bit so it's nice to see people are as interested in a Bartley Gorman film as I am.
Just to reply to billywizz. Yeah I am a huge fan fan of bareknuckle related stuff. I've been into that sort of things ever since I first started martial arts training ten years ago. Since reading the King Of The Gypsies book, I've become fascinated by old fighters and bareknuckle champions.
If Shane does manage to make a King of The Gypsies film I think it would prove a big hit. Especially if the script stays true to the great stories in the book. I have to admit that chapter on the legendary fighter Uriah Burton would look great on screen and would give the film some real depth. Anyway, I could go on for ages about this.
;D
