so.......
aside from the obvious mr meadows, who is everyone's ultimate film director.
despite being a massive fan of hitchcock, kubrick and scorcese i'm going for
Hal Ashby.
I think he's the most ripped off man in hollywood at the mo' - wes anderson, todd solondz, david o russell and several others wouldn't exist without him.
Harold and Maude, Shampoo and The Last Detail are all undisputable classics and Being There is probably my favourite film of all time with Peter Sellars' best performance on film. 10 different actors got oscar nominations who worked with him and 4 won it. He also edited in the heat of the night.
His career is easily enough to be seen as a total legend but sadly a lot of people don't know who he is, so he gets my vote....

Hal Ashby was a wonderful, wonderful filmmaker. A man that was way before his time. Fave Ashby film? Harold & Maude - gotta love those Cat Stevens songs Fave director? It's tough but I'd have to go with the frankly more mainstream, Stanley Kubrick but here are some of the others who have repeatedly inspired me with their work: Sidney Lumet The Coen Brothers PT Anderson Ridley Scott Nicolas Roeg Roger Corman Mario Bava Henri Verneuil Dario Argento Fernando Di Leo Lindsay Anderson David Lynch Alan Clarke Tim Burton Robert Altman Martin Scorsese Quentin Tarantino Umberto Lenzi Francis Ford Coppola Sergio Corbucci Clint Eastwood Sam Peckinpah Sergio Leone Enzo G Castellari Steven Spielberg Don Siegel

I'd have to say Terry Gilliam.
I just love his visual style, and he can tell a good story too... so it's not always style over substance. Plus, my favourite film is Brazil. I guess that's probably a common favourite amongst arty film student types, but then I've never been a film student of any kind... so that's alright then!

I like Cameron Crowe - Say anything is a fantastic film - he also wrote Fast Times At Ridgemont High, which is THE best 80s teen flick, bar none. Personally, I've enjoyed every one of his films, even if Jerry Maguire was a tad overrated. ... and happy birthday, JT

Kubrick is my absolute favourite ( me and the girlfriend are even toying with calling our unborn baby Stanley ;D She doesn't get the connection though!) but apart from him all of the above really! I'm gonna mention Michael Mann as well though HEAT is a mighty movie and probably De Niro's last truely great role IMO. THE LAST DETAIL is still my fave ASHBY movie...
