Anyone here excited about Peter Jackson's new version of King Kong?
I am! I'm a right sucker for big film spectacle that falls on the good side of Hollywood-esque fantasy/action. Peter Jackson may now have the Hollywood clout, but thankfully he still definitely has a unique directing talent (well, in my opinion).
I've been a fan of Peter Jackson ever since I first saw Heavenly Creatures at the cinema. At the time I had no idea about his gore soaked past, but after seeing Heavenly Creatures, I had to investigate his past films. What a joy they are too. I mean who doesn't like seeing a house load of zombies getting shredded by a lawnmower?
Anyone have any thoughts?

Up until recently, the only interest I had in it was the presence of Jack Black. But I've started to see more and more of the hype and I'm really looking forward to it on the whole now, rather than just watching for JB.

You have to remember that PJ is New Zealand's very own Shane Meadows. I've been on board since I went to watch 'Bad Taste' at the flicks many many moons ago. Anyone who has seen 'The Making of Bad Taste' will know how PJ devoted five years of his life to this movie, filming on weekends with his mates. Ditto Richard Taylor, WETA supremo. These people are so talented yet modest they deserve all the success that has come their way.
I've always loved PJ's movies as he's never made a total duffer. Having followed the 'Kong Diaries' since day one I know how hard everyone has worked to make this blockbuster (in every sense) a success. I predict it will be the highest grossing film of all-time but we'll have to wait and see.

I have also watched all the production and post-production diaries as they have appeared on KongisKing.net.
I liked Mr Jackson's comments recently on his promo tour for King King when he said that he's not a film-maker with a message, he's just a film-maker that wants to entertain.
I have seen that making of Bad Taste documentary just the once (was it called Good Taste?). It really is an amazing story of how he and his mates made it over 4 or 5 years on weekends while they worked at a postal office in the week to raise the cash. I really want to see it again. Hope a good Bad Taste DVD is in the works now that Jackson is so huge (although not literally huge anymore haha). There are few bits from the documentary I remember because of the stunning dedication, or lo-fi nature of the production. Like the fact that the aliens heads were supposed to be a bit pointier, but in the end Peter had to flatten them so that he could fit them in his Mum's oven to bake the foam latex heads. The whole bit about Peter making his own stedicam! Peter's parents remembering how Peter and his mates would come back from filming for a good helping of beans on toast! Oh, and I can't leave out the stunning scale models of the house that they built and blew up!
If anyone here only knows Peter Jackson due to Lord of the Rings, then I'm sure you will find how he started really fascinating.

I've seen it already, like a right little Peter Jackson nutter (or ape fetishist).
I came away from it thinking it was a bit of a let down, which isn't what I had expected at all. I didn't have a problem with the immense running time, it seemed to go bye at a fair old rate. Probably the main let down was the overblown CGI fest the movie turns into at frequent intervals. I'm not talking about Kong himself, but more the huge set-pieces involving a miriad of generated beasts all over the shop. Sadly it felt like MR Jackson had tipped over the edge into cloud Lucas land, with pure nonsensical amounts of CGI to create completely implausible sequences. This detracted hugely from the bits that did work for me.
As always, I also sat there thinking, "..surely to goodness CGI is better than this by now??", but no it isn't, it's still sticking out like a badly rendered, gymnastic Yoda. Thankfully for me, I find that Mr Jackson usually surrounds his CGI antics with some emotion, and half decent characters (sadly only half decent though I thought in this case). He also usually dishes out some truly original or inventive moments with his CGI, unlike old Lucas.
Anyway, someone else watch it and bang on about it before I carry on some more!
Oh yeah... I still enjoyed it though! Haha, just picking up on the annoyances. Who doesn't like a big ape??

Yeah, I knew all about Mr Serkis playing the multiple roles.... I had been following the production of King Kong at the site: www.kongisking.net/index.shtmlThey had video production diaries for every week of filming... and then one a week for every week of post-production! Take a look at the link, and you will see all the post production diaries still available to watch down the right hand side. The "11 weeks to go" diary has a lot about Mr Serkis 'monkeying around' if you want to take a look.

its a dam good film, i've seen it twice now in the cinema, the only critism i can think of is that it was too long and there were some unessisary scenes. other than that its great fun, and amazing to watch really, and the added bits to the story work well, also how they've added more emotion for kong. My fave scene is the insect scene, where lumpy gets eaten by those horrid leech things (which are nicknamed Meatweasels ew) ooh they scared the crap outta me, more than any horror film. If you go on the official kong site they have like bios for all the creatures, is a good read if your bored. i may go check out this kongisking site, looks rather interesting. anyway.. fairwell kong fans
