I've just got back from seeing V For Vendetta. Now, I never read Alan Moore's graphic novel, so I can't elaborate on how the film compares but as a stand-alone piece, the movie is really good. It's very talky and low on action but this approach serves the film well. I'd certainly recommend it.

I'd like to see that too.
Gotta love Being There, Hal Ashby really was/is an underrated director in my opinion. Harold & Maude and The Last Detail are some of my favourites. You can really see an influence on modern filmmakers like Wes Anderson.

You can really see an influence on modern filmmakers like Wes Anderson. He was one of the unsung heroes of the seventies. Sure, film afficionados like ourselves appreciate his films but his stature has always been overshadowed by the likes of Scorsese, Altman, Spielberg, etc. Harold & Maude is my all-time favourite Ashby flick - got to love those Cat Stevens songs

Yeah that soundtrack is just the best. 'Trouble'and 'If You Want To Sing Out...' especially. Can you buy it on CD do you know?
I saw Good Night.... it was so good. Maybe the best film I've seen at the cinema for a while, though maybe not for everyone's taste. It was superbly written and acted though, and the main message is as relevant now, and it raises the Inform/Entertain question too. Hopefully this new movement of mainsteam(ish) films with something to say will continue.

Critics suffer from acute split personality disorder. One minute they'll trash a film for being brainless, the next they'll bemoan how something is too talky! V For Very Good

I saw V for Vendeta too, it was alright.... better then all that matrix shite. i liked the matrix (first one, of course) but i also liked the second: matrix reloaded, i rather enjoyed the action sequences in this film, particually the motorway fight scene. However i found Revolutions to be pretty awfull, it was kinda boring.. and had a bad ending.. it just bored me. but i can happily say i'd watch matrix reloaded again and enjoy it. although The Matrix is far superior, an amazing film, up there with my favourites, compared to reloaded it towers over it. I've also seen the animatrix and thought that was awesome, anyone agree? i like the idea of the matrix, but there was no need for two sequels. i see v for vendetta in a tottally different light, the only simlar thing is that the action sequences are amazing (i loved the last fight scene, stunning stuff)

i see v for vendetta in a tottally different light, the only simlar thing is that the action sequences are amazing (i loved the last fight scene, stunning stuff) I disagree, The Matrix and V For Vendetta are very similar, thematically speaking - a naïf unwittingly becomes involved in a plot to overthrow a dictatorial regime… Ry, you must watch Brazil – it’s a superb film and IMO, Gilliam’s best work by a country mile. I wont say any more than that because the less you know, the more you’ll enjoy it. When I first saw the film, I really didn’t know what to expect at all and it blew me away. It’s that good. Nil By Mouth is a great film – Gary Oldman did a great job of depicting that scuzzy SE London family – the look of the film, the dialogue – it’s a phenomenal piece and if he were not to make another film, he would still be remembered as a great director. It also features the repeated use of one of my favourite hybrid swear words: Shitcunt…

is ry my new nickname? my real name is "Rydian" but i shortened it to "Ryd" cos i prefer it. I can see why you think they are simiar, but i cant see how V is naif or unwitting. ooh i see, you mean Natalie portman's character.. ooh yeah, i see what you mean now. still, thematically similar, i still see them very differently, particually because V is a comic book adaption, and the Matrix is not.
brazil sounds good, i will chekc it out somtime.
a collegue of mine has just lent me "Mulholland Drive" and "Lost in La Mancha" both look good, i look forward to seeing them. the second of which stars terry gilliam!
nil by mouth sounds good too, gary oldman is an aweosme actor.

Okay, point taken, RYD! Mulholland Drive is a great film – have you seen any of David Lynch’s others? I can recommend Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart without reservation. Lost Highway is superb but an acquired taste – it’s seriously nuts but is very creepy.
