I read in an old interview I just found (from when Midlands was released) that Shane did some adverts (for booze and Mcdonalds).
Which ones were they? I'm intrigued!

I did the Euro McDouble advert with the Alan Sheaer look-a-like, I also did another Maccyd's one which had a bloke moaning at his Mrs about the cost of what she had spent on clothes, the we cut into the back seat to see that rather than spending the money on clothes for herself, it was actually for their baby, who we reveal is wearing a cowboy hat and trendy garb (tee hee!). I also did an archers aqua advert where a bloke tells his mrs he won't be back late and the he sneaks in dead late, but the twist is she comes back even later (kazowee!).
I haven't done one for about three years which is a pisser as they pay about as well as a feature film but for only three days work! Alot of people think it's a sell out doing them, personally, I have met quite alot of cast and crew on adverts (Jo Hartley and Emily Aston from Dead mans) that I probably wouldn't have met other wise, so quite enjoy doing them. The adverts themselves aren't the most rewarding creatively, but it's nice to be able to get as many free cheeseburgers as you can eat in one day and not have it docked from your wages!

Its alrite La, Spike Lee did it, as long as you don't sell out when you actually have the opportunity to say something on film. How can something like selling out be that black and white, like if youve done 1 then youve sold out??? Going from this Michel Gondry would be one of the biggest whores around ... I'm sure we dont all believe that.
In saying this though apart from a few films I can't stand the would Saatchi and Saatchi connection from the early eighties.

YEAH THE ARCHERS ONE WAS GOOD, I DON'T THINK ITS A SELL OUT FOR A DIRECTOR TO MAKE ADVERTISEMENTS, IT'S DIFFERENT TO USING YOUR CELEBRITY AND PERSONA TO SELL A PRODUCT BY STARRING IN THEM WHICH I THINK IS A BIT MORE IFFY, ANYONE REMEMBER THENIKE ADVERT WITH THE FOOTY MATCH IN A SHIP IT WAS TERRY GILLIAM AND IT WAS A GREAT ADVERT, I ALSO REMEMBER READING IN EMPIRE DAVID LYNCH HAD MADE ONE FOR A GAME PLATFORM (CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH) AND WHEN IT WAS SHOWN IT HAD BEEN MADE BLACK AND WHITE WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE WHAT'S THE POINT OF HIRING A GREAT AND GIFTED DIRECTOR THEN MESSING HIS WORK ABOUT?

The Lynch one for PS2 was the bloke with a duck's head saying 'welcome to the third place' weren't it? Weird.....
There's some quality ads out there (you know when you've been Tango'd). Hopefully one day Shane will bring out a DVD retrospective of all his non-film bits and bobs, like the one Chris Cunningham's got.

I'd heard about the ads, but didn't know which specific ones. Following in the McDonald's footsteps of Ken Loach! I think I recall all the ads mentioned! Oh.. I did find some stills of an ad way back when I was making the site. I think it may have been for a bank or something.... and errr.. I think it had one of the lads from 24/7 in it.... running after a taxi cab?? Not sure now. Oh... all these ads... who comes up with the ideas for them? You or someone else?

Shane didn't you do a promo for BBC Live Music as well, or did I dream it The one with the bloke walking around various locations pretending that the whole country was a music venue?

Meadows, Lovejoy and Chantelle. That would be amazing. But what would it advertise? I'm thinking maybe Durex?

I've just posted this as a news update on the Home page, but I've just found two of Shane's ads available for viewing online! Coincidence or what!! I was only looking for any different images I could gather to liven up the site a bit. Click the link below to get to the two ads. There is an ad for BBC Music Live, and there is also the McDonald's Cowbaby one (which Shane mentioned in his post earlier in the thread). They are both blummin' good too! www.tomboy-films.co.uk/director.asp?dirID=1In the BBC Music Live ad, there are a few shots that remind me of Dead Man's Shoes! Wide shot of fields and dry-stone wall! Oh yeah.... and on the write up about Shane on that page, it says he was a 'clown's assistant' for a bit!? What's that all about? Sounds like a dodgy euphamism or something! haha

good work dave yet again you prove you position as our mighty leader i really wanted to see those ads but did i go after them no cos i'm essentially very lazy, but you found them dave well done mate, the colour 247 stills were interesting too. and "clowns assistant" definately a dodgy euphamism though it might explain the inspiration for vic reeves and bob mortimer being dressed like clowns in once upon a time in the midlands

Some of the greatest filmmakers have continued to make adverts and many even started their careers making them - David Fincher, Alan Parker, Ridley and Tony Scott all started out making ads and the Scotts still make them today.
Talking of filmmakers and advertising - anyone seen the BMW films? For those that haven't, BMW commissioned five or six short films (each run between 5 and 10 minutes long) and each were directed by a famous filmmaker and all were produced by David Fincher. Each film is linked by 'the driver' played by Clive Owen.
The first batch (directed by Wong Kar Wai, John Frankenheimer, Guy Ritchie, Ang Lee and Alejandro González Iñárritu) was so successful they spawned a second batch directed by Joe Carnahan, Tony Scott and John Woo. These are wonderful mini-movies and each has its director’s fingerprints all over it. Definitely recommended and they’re available on DVD (released exclusively to BMW garages after they premiered online) but can be picked up on eBay.
Best of the bunch? Tony Scott's Beat The Devil which stars James Brown!

oh yeah, I saw the BMW shorts, my favorite one was WKW I think, It had Forrest Whittaker and Mickey Rouke in it too. The thing that pissed me off about Beat The Devil was the apperance of Marylin Manson at the end, lowerd it down a tad.
