After seeing recent dire attempts at trying to portray disaffected male youth, Im talking Green Street, Football Factory and earlier ID, I'm really glad that someone of Shanes talent is addressing this genre of movie. In the past I've tended to find that the people who have most enjoyed the above movies (who I know anyway) are extremely similar to those characters portrayed in the movie and see it as some sort of twisted vindication for the way they behave on a Saturday afternoon. For all the bleating about showing the true nature of violence and blah blah the above films allegedly condemn I honestly think they glamorised it and made it even more acceptable to those who go out and do it on a regular basis.

Damn right to many movies glamorise the lifestyle instead of showing you how f**ked up these people are and what happens to them.

Those films mentioned are piss poor though! Green St and Football Factory they are like a schoolboys project.
I'm a football 'casual' and I thought they were woeful and spurned loads of wannabe kiddies at the football which spoils a long standing 'scene/lifestyle'.
Although with the exception of ID it does go some way to show how lives are/can be ruined!

Yea i agree those films are pretty pants yet the majority of my mates (most of them not knowing a good film from a bad one anyway) love them to bits because its inspired them even more to behave like tht! anyway this is england will literally shit on those films..

Let's just ban any 'cockney' geezer films or mockney seeing as how the current ones are full of fake east enders.

I still think ''Made In Britain'' is paramount in its depiction of a skinheads lifestyle and mentality.

I wouldn’t put The Football Factory in the same bracket as ID and Green Street. Although I dismissed it upon watching it for the first time, I had a change of hear upon the second viewing. IMO, The Football Factory is far better depicting hooliganism than either of those other films you mentioned, mate, it’s also a lot better directed. The Football Factory doesn’t try to preach about violence being bad – it doesn’t need to - the characters’ actions and motivations give them enough rope to hang themselves. Alan Clarke's film, The Firm is still the best film on the subject, without a doubt. For the record, I’ve enjoyed all three of Nick Love’s films and at then end of the day he makes films to entertain and seems very unapologetic about it. His most recent film, The Business is great fun, even though the plot mechanics are those we’ve seen time and time again. His first film, Goodbye Charlie Bright is a great film and one that IMHO, is an excellent insight into youth culture.

I agree with you mate, I think Nick Love makes really energetic, watchable films and he knows his subject. I thought The Business was one of the funniest films I've seen in a long time and the soundtrack was top too.
P.S. I can't believe Shane Meadows actually posts on here

I personally think Football Factory was poor.
And agree the Firm is the best option yet.
IMO Football Factory, Business, Charlie Bright are pretty poor films when you compare them to Shanes. It's all about opinions, but his choice of lead actors are poor to again compared to the ones Shane Meadows uses.

I've not seen either The Football Factory or The Business.... Does anyone else listen to Adam and Joe on Xfm? Well, they do a semi-regular competition called Crap Commentary Corner, where clips froma DVD commentary are played and people have to guess the film and the people talking. Anyway, they did The Football Factory ages ago, and last week they did The Business. The main reason they used another Nick Love and Danny Dyer (dire? ) is because they are hilarious in how moronic they are! I'm not sure what people have made of the Football Factory violence, but you sould have heard the clips that Adam and Joe played of the commentary! Nick Love and Danny Dyer (especially) just going ".... Look at that.. BOSH!... HAVE IT.... fucking yes!" during all fight scenes.

Yeah it's awful. At the end Danny Dyer says to the director "oh look at that, fucking genius. You are a fucking genius" You just weep. Well i nearly did.

Dave, I've listened to the commentaries on both The Football Factory and The Business and will say that they are two of the most enjoyable I have listened too. Discussion of filmmaking technique takes a back seat to their imature observations concerning women and cast members. These commentaries are in a word, hilarious. There's certainly no pretentiousness on display, that's for sure ;D

I'm damn sure they are hilarious just going by what I''ve heard in the short clips... but it's definitely a case of laughing at.. not with!

I'd never seen Danny Dyer in anything before football factory (at least not consciously) and I just couldn't watch the bloke made me cringe to fuck. Maybe I'm missing something but he'll always be Danny Dire to me.
