My ex-husband's an old Wigan Casino boy. Somebody on Youtube wrote 'I wish it was like that nowadays but all teenagers want to do now is drink'.... No disrespect Carolyn, but by 1977 they'd all gone off to Blackpool Mecca and were dressing like Bryan Ferry (well not the girls) and listening to Jazz-funk. The tune you posted has a bit of a Northern beat at the beginning, but this is disco no?? Anyway, here's a real old classic that I like: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YrmzM7yT-9gthough for some reason my computer doesn't want to play it

Jill
Maybe Lovin is Really my Game isn't proper Northern Soul then but it was a classic around West Bromwich and surrounding areas and we classed it as Northern Soul. I thought it was anyway.

Stoke's still abit of a hot bed for Northern Soul I think. It's a while now since I left there, but there used to be a regular Northern Soul night at the Town Hall and an all nighter at Keele University....think they're still going. The local radion station used to have a Northern Soul slot too.

whereabouts in west brom? Still hold quite a few good northern night round the midlands regurlarly, mate of mines dad DJ's some, I'm from Great Barr but living in Bearwood now. Lovin is Really My Game was popular at discos that we went to when I was at school (at the church in Hamstead at the top of the Hamstead Road). Not sure where exactly the Northern Soul nights were in West Brom, but I think near the High Street. I've got a really nice Northern Soul compilation CD but, to be honest, I hadn't heard the stuff on it before. I know that a couple of years ago the 100 Club on Oxford Street was holding Northern Soul allnighters every six weeks. They may still be doing so. I think there is still quite a big following with this music. Carolyn x

Be a shame if this thread died.....need to get more folks on site on board I think ;D. Here's another one from me. As you can see, I like the real old stuff. The Wigan boys and girls didn't just love his music, they copied his moves too!

Got an old Northern Soul LP from the town the other day...''It comprises the lyrical and vocal stylings of The Apollas, Ben E King, Soul Brothers Six, Bill Cosby (yes, THE Bill Cosby)...and many more''
Lovely tunes though.

bit of a shame that northern hasn't featured more in the soundtracks to shane's films, especially since there's such a big soul scene in the east mids and staffs. seem to remember there's a northern track on romeo brass, forget which one.

P.P.Arnold Everything's Gonna Be Alright:
I saw her back in about 1997/8, appearing with Ocean Colour Scene at Trentham Gardens-still had a great voice. I agree-a few more Northern tracks would be splendid.
