another thing which i find highly amusing is the fact that Shane seems utterly convinced tht he wrote the script for smalltime, when i can assure you all wholeheartedly that it was all improvised and ideas from everyone about where it was gonna go and what WE were gonna do.. I've never seen a mention of Shane writing the script without it also being mentioned that in the end he abandoned what he had written and went for improv instead. It's in the info on the Smalltime page of this site, and I did that years ago. shanemeadows-co-uk.nottsbox.com/smalltime.htmThere is a published script in the Twentyfour Seven screenplay book for "Left" which became Smalltime. It is quite different though. All I currently recall is that it starts with stealing lead from a church roof... I think. I don't want to get into the rest of your concerns Leon because it all sounds a bit political, and I know nothing! Here's a nice big review for the DVD anyway: www.dvdoutsider.co.uk/dvd/reviews/s/small_time.html

Got my DVD yesterday and watched it straight away!
I haven't watched it for years now, so I was glad to find that I still really like it.
However... THE BFI seem to have fudged up the DVD a bit. Have other people noticed the following issues:
Weird lines across the image when there is a lot of motion.... or when the picture fades in or out of black? They are not dodgy lines from interlacing adjustments, just feint, thin bands across the image. I know some issues are probably down to the standard def original filming format (Digi-beta cameras I think), but I'm sure these lines were not evident on the VHS version.
Worse than that though, the sound drops out for a split-second at at least four different points in the film (those are the ones I noticed, there may have been more, but I was too engrossed to notice). This is especially noticeable when music is playing of course. The two instances I can recall off the top of my head are; The bit after the car-boot sale, when they are all going home in various states of anger/annoyance/crying. There's a drop out in the music. Then on the very final bit of the credits at the end of the film, the music drops out again.
Crappo!
This did not happen on the VHS... I would have remembered!
Anyone else tested their copy yet?

Do come again! ;D It's strange actually, because there's a few items being bought on the shop that are not Shane Meadows related at all. Thanks to all those buyers. Someone has recently bought the new Stewart Lee book! I can heartily recommend that... good choice!

does that mean I can channel all my amazon purchases thro' the shop? Yes... I think there are a couple of ways. Thinking of buying another SLR soon? If you scroll down to the bottom of the shop page, I have put in a general Amazon search box. You can search for anything in there. Also, if you click on the little "Powered by Amazon logo" you are taken to the Amazon.co.uk site, but it's still registered as browsing via the Meadows shop.... I think, not entirely sure though. One lovely person bought an Xbox360 and games via the shop last Christmas.

Yeah... same problem here, I've tested on three copies and the sound cuts out I emailed BFI about it and they said the sound faults are 'as they appear on the original source material' as it was a low-budget film shot on analogue video... strange how they weren't on the VHS copy or the Channel 4 broadcast then? It's sad they couldn't have made more of an effort with Shane's first film, I know it's no Mean Streets but it's Mean Streets in Nottingham ;D

It's really crap! Like you say, the VHS was fine! Good job on emailing the BFI. Shame they are not willing to admit any wrong doing. I'm tempted to do a comparison video to show the BFI up. haha I still have the VHS somewhere. I think I recall the sound drop out happening about three times on the BFI DVD? Is there more. The most annoying one for me is when they are leaving the car boot sale and there's plenty of mardy behaviour going on! haha. The music is ace there.. but not so ace with a lame sound drop out in it.

Yeah the sound cuts out about three times - the car boot sale is the worst, then I think it's the scene in the cafe when they're planning the robbery and the last ones on the end credits which is still annoying as it breaks up the music. I think either the BFI's master copy must be a bit worn over time or they just couldn't be bothered
