Hi guys,
I'm aware there's a dvd release forthcoming, any plans for a Blu-Ray release? Can't get CH4 HD in Ireland and the series looks stunning so far, even in standard definition.

There's only a DVD scheduled so far. Shame, I know but I'll take a DVD over not having it at all.

I altered the title of this thread slightly so that I don't have to start a new thread.
I've just updated the front page of the site with the DVD and soundtrack CD news.

Not intending to pedantic but is 'Shirely' (Billy Bragg) actually Greetings to the New Brunette? Really like that song!
This would be agood one for the music vids thread:

It was clearly made in HD, so what is the logic in not releasing it on BluRay? BluRay should by now be the default format...it should be "oh and by the way it's also available on DVD". I'm really getting concerned that BluRay will remain a niche market forever the way things are going, which would be a shame. The original movie was eventually released on BluRay so I assumed the new series would go straight to BluRay.

The show looked stunning in HD as broadcast. It was clearly made in HD, so what is the logic in not releasing it on BluRay? Pretty much everything on UK TV now is shot in HD, but Blu Ray releases of TV series' are pretty rare. Dr Who gets Blu Ray releases, but other major UK dramas like Doc Martin and Jonathan Creek don't. The logic is probably that a Blu Ray release won't necessarily be profitable enough. I hope that they do eventually bring TIE86 out on blu, but like Gareth says, digital content delivery will probably take over as the dominant format before Blu Ray does.

not to get too off topic but I think we'll be downloading HD films via itunes or the like before Bluray has a chance to fully catch on as the default format, I think you may be right. But for people like me - I have a 52" HD TV and don't watch TV shows or movies on the computer - I would have to completely re-wire my lounge in order to watch downloaded HD content! Also, downloading doesn't lend itself to permanent storage without terrabytes of space. Actually that tells you all you need to know about why the industry would prefer downloading....

This is frustratingly very true, although I think some things like Being Human and Sherlock Holmes are on BluRay? It's not just UK, American series such as True Blood & Mad Men are on BluRay, yet they chose to release Deadwood on DVD only. Getting back on-topic, TIE86 is the best UK television drama I've seen since Boys From The Black Stuff, and I just wish I could own it in the high definition format in which it was shot.

The original movie was eventually released on BluRay so I assumed the new series would go straight to BluRay. I don't ever see Blu-ray become a successor to DVD - it'll just compliment it, rather like how LaserDisc was the choice of serious film afficionados/home cinema enthusiasts in the US during the days of VHS. I love Blu-ray, think it's a wonderful format but does it really give much more to those that know little about AV equipment? There's was a rather worrytign survey done last year in when it was revealed that a large percentage of the British public thought they were watching HD programming because they had bought 'HD Ready' TV sets, though didn't have them connected to an HD Sky/Virgin Box or Blu-ray player! They were under the impression that there TV made played standard def programming in HD! That's the sort of uphill struggle you're dealing with. The new tech is just plain confusing for a lot of people, probably because it's evolved so quickly. Still, I've got the DVD on pre-order. As I said before, I'd rather have the show in any format, rather than wait for a BD that may not ever get a release.

Plus upscaled DVDs can look pretty lovely too! The worrying trend to put all the good extra features on the blu-ray versions is going to get annoying for those without a bluray player/ps3!

Interesting discussion here. This trend does annoy me! I'm kind of itching to get a Blu Ray player. I think a lot of the discs are too expensive though. 25 quid for Broken Embraces! I saw one for 30 quid the other day too! Upscaled DVDs do look pretty sweet. I'll be getting the DVD of TIE86 for sure. But will feel a little gutted when the Blu Ray comes out, ha ha.

Sounds like you're still using analogue shops in the year 2010! Digital shops are where it's at! Play and Amazon have the Broken Embraces Blu-Ray for 12.99 Time you bought a PS3! ;D Seriously though, it is the wisest choice for one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market combined with all the PlayStation goodness! As long as you have an HD TV of course.

The worrying trend to put all the good extra features on the blu-ray versions is going to get annoying for those without a bluray player/ps3! That's the only reason I buy/rent blu rays, really. They've tricked me into consuming the more expensive format purely by making DVDs more rubbish for extras.
