I was looking forward to a new theatrical film from the mind of Mr Meadows too Mr CliftonEstate.... and I guess if I had to say one way or the other, I would prefer it over more This Is England TV episodes.
Mr Clifton (Bernie?)... if you haven't watched it yet, then check out the Southbank Award acceptance video I put on the front page of the site. In it Shane says that This Is England 90 is the final part.
So, as far we can gather so far, it's a two hour feature-length TIE88, then a six part TIE90. That is going to take a good long while!
The shoot for TIE88 begins in about 6 weeks time I heard from somewhere.

Do you think Shane will keep this lighthearted, being Christmas n'all? - The gang having an eggnog session whilst watching Only Fools and Horses in paper hats or will it all be rape and racism with a Shaky soundtrack? Preferably there'll be a balance of both.

Then say a year to make the film meaning it's going to be at least three years at the earliest before any film hits the screen. Gutted Gutted Gutted

I figure that Shane isn't the type to do projects purely because there's a demand for them (although that says a lot for the project). Or because there's money to be made and a TV station eager for him to make it for them. Shane will do things because that's where his heart lies. He always said he intended to follow up TIE'86 with more installments, so I'd have to guess that he has stories he really wants to tell. That's what I love about Shane's work - that he's telling these stories because they mean something to him. I suppose he could have interspersed the TV series with new films, but maybe he'd rather get these out of the way now and then he can give the new films his all? Whatever the case, we know he does have plans and I'm sure they will get made. I am excited to see Shane's take on the horror genre in particular, I'll admit.

Clifton, I also have to admit I'd much rather see a Film. But I have to agree with what Kelpie says above. I think Shane really feels he has to make these stories. And TV is possibly the only way to tell them in full. Also, this year and the next is the ideal time to shoot these characters as they're all at the ideal age. Now or never really, unless you'd like to see the same characters with a different cast.. imagine how odd that'd be!
I don't think 2 years is too long to wait. I mean it sure is a long time, but you sometimes wait that long for a new album from a band. And it's not like we won't see any Meadows work in between. The TIE series basically is and will be long films.
I too am wondering how jolly/unjolly the '88 episode will be. I think it'd be great to see something more on the jolly side, obviously with the rough edges. Kind of like Somers Town. There's some big issues in that film, but not heavy handed at all. Not that I disliked '86's full on themes, it was entirely necessary. Would be cool to see an overly uplifting story from the TIE gang.
Also, if the next ep and series are a success this'll only be a good thing for Shane's films surely? More people will know of him, and thus more will go to see his films.

I think the end of the TIE series will mark the end of an era for Shane, I suppose filmmakers can only pull stories directly from their own experiences for so long and maybe Shane sees the TIE series as the way to end that chapter of his career with a cast and characters he loves.

True. Also, we do have to take the cast into account. They obviously want to make this as much as Shane and are willing to work other projects around it. Leave it a few years, and they might be contracted into other projects they can't get out of.
I'm hoping for a story that is gritty but ultimately uplifting, or bittersweet. It'd be nice to see Lol have a moment where she's able to laugh.
I'm sure Shane's fine tuning his ideas/plans for future projects in and amongst all this.

I also have to admit I'd much rather see a Film. . Ditto. Shane's an important film maker. Having said that, HBO's stuff shows that TV drama can be excellent and important and run to a good few seasons without turning into soap. The real draw back is the one people moaned about re TIE 86 (including me). Just been watching Broadwalk Empire on the new Sky channel-Scorsese directs, great cast (including Stephen Graham as Al Capone), lavish production, etc, etc........ and I was constantly thinking 'how good would this be if it wasn't for these feckin ads.' I'm tempted to boycott the Xmas Special on TV and wait for the DVD ;D (I won't, of course )

As much as I'd love to see another Meadows film as soon as humanly possible I can see why Shane would do this. If my memory serves me correct Shane explained the production turnaround of TV, I'm sure he said TIE86 was filmed, edited and on TV within between 6-9 months where as TIE the film was around a 3 year project from start to finish. Also why not take the opportunity when offered, the TV series was well received, has won awards and could potentially open up more funding avenues to make more films. I thought the series was brilliant both Shane's episodes and the comedy of Tom Harpers. I'd like to see the special have more humour than the dark stuff as after all it is Christmas ;D
Congrats Shane, Jack, Tom and everyone else on the Southbank award. Missfits was good but not quite TIE86, well deserved.

Shane has forgotten his roots That's an incredible statement! He's making TV ABOUT his roots.
