Thought the scene when Woody thought Lol was dead was fantastically blackly comic. Had me in stitches. And then them making up was beautifully done. Some great lines there and wonderful perfomances.
Overall I enjoyed TIE88's darker more melancholic feel and thought the performances were top notch.
The way we dealt with the ads is by hitting the mute button. It knocks out their power and helps to keep the mood of the drama intact.

I really didn't see that as a funny scene.
Woody thinking the love of his life has passed him by and that he'll never have a say about it.
Even after they told him, I didn't think it was some great funny scene.

Thanks for all the amazing feedback. X.
I really hope that one day I can show it in the UK in its entirety with no breaks. It is a film split into 3 parts (then into 12 by Tv) so I hope I can get the 'Film' version seen somehow. I was intending to have some screenings of the continuous version but as I didnt finish the TV version till Tuesday night it got lost in the Christmas post.

The 'Exorcism' scene made the three episodes for me, was a fantastic gruesome look back over the years.
Woody vs. Milky was another highlight, very intense.

Woody vs Milky was amazing; to see two 'brothers' ripped apart coming face to face; and Woody just exploding; it was such a real scene. I just love how we drop in on all of them without much filling of the last few years; what has gone in between; makes it more real to just see them now rather then a sub plot explaining. One scene that stands out for me is Combo in his cell; he most likely believes Lol and he will be together when he is out; I hope in TIE '90 we see him coming out and trying to accept they will not happen. Or could be in '90 we drop in and see Lol and Combo together. Never tell how it will go and that is another reason I love it so much.

I've given my fair share of criticisms in the past about TIE but can honestly say this series has been note perfect. The comic scenes with Tommo and his special grapes have been a perfect juxstaposition with the darker stuff with Lol and her demons.
The series has been beautifully shot, well written and superbly acted. Even the actors with few lines add something beit with their look (especially Trev who says everything with her eyes).
It really beggers belief that Shane can get such good performamances from relative amateurs. The pitfalls of such an approach can be seen in Andrea Arnolds Wuthering Heights where most of the cast just can't act.
The only small thing I didn't like was Lol backtracking on the story about the night with Combo. Thought it was a bit of cop out and also her telling Combo she loved him...was implicit and didn't need to be said i.m.o.
That said TIE is easily the best show on T.V and is an absolute triumph in these soul destroying X Factor times.
Oops I forget Shane is a big fan of American Idol but you get the point.

What I took from the Lol/Combo scene was Lol was lost/alone/rejected and hurting and she wanted someone to want her; make her feel special for a minute and the only one who she knew would do that was Combo. Plus the killing of her dad was bearing down on her and no one else knew except for Combo so she could feel completely at ease around him as he knows and she does not feel on edge. Just my thoughts on it

Yeah i suppose you could read it that she was kinda desperate for love. I just think the moment characters say they love each other the tension disappears

I've been drinking beer, so not wholly coherent-but just to say that made me cry three times (real, wet tears) and I'm a Lol style hard arse Loved it-and the bits of black comedy mixed into the heavy, heavy drama. That's it from me-will post tomorrow, when I've processed it a bit. Gonzofilms..the answer to your question is no, unless the (irish) V.O and religious theme in film/drama hasn't been done before or since. What did that have to do with this story, or suicide or anything else? Did it remind you of Mean Streets too? We've all seem Easy Rider and so are not awstruck by your 'insightful' observations. As Harvey would say, you're a dick, move on. hey jill i dont know who harvey is or why youre so upset about this exactly, did you make this tv show or something ? Movies + Tv are full of references to other scenes in movies and these 2 struck me as being very similar even if they were intended for different effects + I was glad to see a bit like that on tv, didnt say it sucked in fact it was probably the best bit in the whole thing which is why it interested me + reminded us of the other scene. Having a person (irish or not) rambling abstractly about religion over quickly edited abstract images didnt happen in mean streets either that i remember (and cant think of many other scenes where this happened in other movies, obviously being a bit of a genius you do tho). maybe in your infinite wisdom you saw a different version than i did ? lucky you i would like to see that . All in all get off your high horse + it was only an observation, probably was wrong and so what ? If you just wanted people to go "woo i love it" why bother having a forum in the first place ? if discussion about films isnt welcome on a film forum i dunno what youre gonna talk about, but am certainly done talking to you anyway ! i read some other dude comparing a bit to the wrestler earlier in this thread by the way hope you missed that bit as it might upset you, pretty controversial stuff ! everything exists in a vacuum of course silly me anyways am done posting but will look forward to this is england 90 or whenever it is maybe jill will have calmed down by then ? probably be up to this is england 2146 by that point tho maybe you can have a cameo role as the mysterious "harvey" youre so fond of, keeping all the idiots in check with your wit + wisdom. best of luck anyways cheers + bye Gonzo, I deleted my post-before I realised you'd replied to it-because it was bad temprered and-probably-an over reaction to what you had said. That said, your long mmmmm did make me think you were implying it was more 'lifted' than homage. Using religious/spiritual themes and overtones is actually pretty commonplace in films-as you well know-and Shane has done it before in his work. Maybe, I misread the tone of your comment and implication (though, actually I don't think so). Having just watched a piece of really well crafted, moving drama in which the entire cast and the leads particularly, had given it everything they had, I was annoyed that was all you had to say about it. Anyway, now that you've thrown a bit of sarcasm at me, get over it.

Like everybody else has said, that was so powerful. It moved me to tears, more than once, mainly I think because of the raw emotion in the performances. Throughout, the cast has all been great, but especially so Vicky and Joe, who turned in brilliant performances. I absolutely believed in them and their stories. See JG is getting some great press today. I've been so caught up in the story, that I've scarcely noticed anything else (sorry). Really looking forward to wtaching the whole thing again-with a bit more distance-and noticing the shots, editing etc. Congratulations to everybody-stunning, knock-out, stuff

Looking forward to watching the whole thing back to back on DVD, but it would great to see it on the big screen, if that can every be made to happen. I am wondering what you make of all the facebook and twitter folk who are now demanding a weekly installment ;D

Just watched 88 right the way through and its your greatest work Shane, thats coming from somone who's seen Deadmans Shoes and the original TIE well over 20 times each, Deadmans Shoes will always have a special place in my top films because it was the first film that I really connected with as feeling like it came from the same place I did, but 88 is undoubtedly your greatest work its a crime if this doesn't get screened at cinemas - Maybe next Christmas?
the stomach pump intense flashback and then back into the nurse's prayer is maybe the most powerful (fictional) thing I've seen on screen it throws your head into a whirlwind to the point you cant even comprehend why your so moved by it.
As an atheist I generally don't find religious imagery/ passages to be moving at all, but what you used in this was so tasteful beautiful, magic. To think the nurse was on her first acting gig was unbelievable.
Vicky McClure words cant describe her talent, Joe really stepped up to the Mark and everyone was on top form,
couple of things I took note of; Woodys tattoo in the bath "Be as you wish to seem" as someone else said earlier that lingering shot of the sofa "I'm not Lol though am I" Cut to; Woody tattoo on Lols hand (and they say that bone to spaceship cuts good)
honestly cant praise this enough, was perfect.

The Woody and Milky confrontation was shocking and stunning in all the right ways. Most amazingly, I have gathered from interviews that it was done in one brutal take (the first take)! Not only that, but Joe Gilgun mentions how real and dangerous it was (I'm pretty certain it was this scene he was talking about... Check out the video interview I posted in the 'press' thread last night). By this I'm guessing he means he genuinely punched Andrew Shim when attacking him.... Seems insane unless of course you know that Andrew Shim is a UFC fighter so must take some epic punches on a regular basis. But still, very raw, dangerous and real.
