Here's a pre-emptive thread for the post screening discussions of This Is England '88 where all manner of plot points and spoilers can be discussed.... but please only discuss the episodes that have been aired so far. I don't want to see spoilerific discussions about TIE88 anywhere else! Hope I get to see the episodes as they are screened. My job is doing a good job of trying to ruin it for me! Please presume that all the posts in the rest of this thread will contain great big **SPOILERS!**

I haven’t been on here in a while, I’ve been checking the forum regularly and the front page too in the build up to This is England 88 tonight, but I haven’t posted in a while. So here goes…not really any spoilers as such but I am so excited to see it tonight and over the next few evenings. Can’t wait to see how the story’s developed. I have been reading a lot of the spoilers and interviews and things and I can’t wait to see the characters and how they’ve dealt with the events that took place in 86. I think it’s safe to say I am very excited. I’m expecting (or should that be bracing myself for) big things and let’s face it, we know we’ll get it. This is Shane Meadows after all! ;D

Thought the first episode was great. I had huge fits of laughter, and bouts of fear too. I saw that ending coming... but it sure did creep me out. Its good to see more fantasy (horror?) elements, and good to see its as blunt as the realism. The water scene was very well done, superb editing and shooting for that bit. Woody and Shaun on top form, very funny and their characters are so well formed. Vicky is superb, again, as expected.
Can't wait to see the rest! Don't have to wait long either!

First episode was great. Continuity with the characters is excellent, its like meeting up with old friends. The emotional ride was fun, traumatic and strangely comforting . I was in my twenties and I enjoy relating my time and experiences to that of the characters, ( at the risk of stating the bleeding obvious). I watched it with my daughter who is nearly 16. She has seen the film and TIE86 and enjoyed it just as much as I did. Excellent job Mr Meadows, top man.

yeah what Ryd said! - loved how creepy but blunt that end bit was handled, that image and feeling has really stuck with me,
Everything we've come to expect to be top notch was and the tone for me was absolutely bang on where as there were those few odd large moments in the first episodes of 86 this was perfect.
only negative was about 20minutes in the Sony F3 popped into my head and I started distracting myself thinking about how well it was matching,
cannot wait to see the rest, what an amazing image to end the first episode on. Its a stormy night here on the coast in cumbria and I'm now gonna try and sleep with images of Lols dad stood in the corner of my room floating round my head

Great stuff.... an unsettling build up to something coming up is how it felt.
I agree Gareth that it was much better without those slightly out of place feeling 'big' moments in 86.
The old mirror trick! hehe Will he be under the bed next? ;D
Great pics oh Lord Thribb!

I feel a bit guilty saying I enjoyed that, it was all so sad. I did though. I agree with Foxy about the continuity in the characters and story. Very brave thing to do on TV, especially after a long interlude and with some new viewers, but it was honest and brave to pick up with Lol and Woody (and the rest of the gang) like that. Vicky McClure was great. It'll be interesting to see how people react to Lol now she's a mother (and a single mother especially). Really tough to watch her struggling in isolation with her ghosts. Good to see how Woody's character's developed too-all the humour, with all that constrained anger underneath-thought the interaction with his boss was really well done-sense there's some explosive stuff to come. Think Woody going to be one of my favourite characters this time around. Shaun and Smell is kind of sad-people outgrowing one another. Liked the much slower pace-feels like one huge come down after the partying in the first series. Much more Meadowsy too. Liked the music at the end. Not sure what the piece was, but brings to mind Dead Man's Shoes a bit, but more so the piece that accompanies Darcy 'fall' in 24/7 (Parce mihi Domine?).
A few randoms. Nice observation on the posh dad-why do middle class people always do the running commentary on everything they do? ;D The casual racism was depressing, but honest. Would certainly have been like that back then (maybe still is). My heart broke a bit when Lol said this is what I've got.......could you have found a more beautiful kid with bigger, browner eyes (you manipulative genius) ? ;D

A great foundation for the next to episodes to build on.
Woody trapped in his own personal hell, Shawn's conflict, Lol's fragil state.
Great to catch up with all the characters and a great first episode that sets the pace for the next to.
So glad this isn't being played weekly.

A fantastic start for the next few episodes. The scene with Lol taking a bath was an absolute masterpiece of it's own. I am very excited to see how this will play out, great work so far!
P.S. Where in the world are Flip and Iggy?!

I was a bit on the fence about the "ghost of christmas past". But it was done well so I don't have any problem with it.

Loved it; was giddy before seeing it which is strange given that it can be at times a dark one. Woody seems to be about ready to boil and poor Lol; never felt more for a fictional character then her; speaks a lot that Vicky can play her so well. Shaun and Smell are just great together; please don't split them up Also sorry if it has been already asked and answered but anyone know where Meggy is?
