**SPOILERS** There were lots of things that shocked/upset me in DMS but I still remember the scene where Richard kills Soz with punch. This was such a brutal scene it turned my stomach.

For me it's easily the scene between Sonny and Anthony in the kitchen. Sonny is pure evil. It's still difficult to watch even after I've seen the film so many times.

There are lots of shocking things in it. The bit that gets me is the bit when he kills the guy with the small knife and he hugs him and convinces him that he's going to live before killing him.

That's the part that got to me the most, too. Not just what Sonny tells Anthony to do, but also as this is going on, he basically tells him that Richard doesn't want anything to do with him -- it's like he's saying, 'I'm all you've got, so if you don't want to mess things up with me, then you'd better do as I say.'

Yeah, that bit was pretty shocking as well.

I agree with it being the scene in the kitchen very intense. Must admit though there were a few times whilst watching this film that i closed my eyes.

Yeah the scene with the knife. Always reminds me of the scene in Godfather (I or II, I forget) with Michael Corleone, his brother-in-law, some plane tickets, some goons and a car windscreen. Both utterly chilling. My stomach's gone a bit funny now just thinking about these two scenes!

Sonny's death was shocking in part due to him being killed fairly early on

The fact I spotted a Morphy Richard's kettle just like one I used to own.

Kitchen scene. For reasons already stated.
Nice thread by the way, nice contrast to the "Funniest thing..." Thread. we should start one for TIE.

It's just the way the film is slowly built up never knowing just how far Richard is going to go and Richard not knowing just what he is cable of doing or how far he will go when he hands the sons a knife etc.

yup, anthony and sonny in the kitchen is the bit that has me spitting with anger the most (if such a reaction exists, does it?)
good thread. also, provides a chance to bring up this point (not sure if this point comes from my blain, or from something i read, or from something someone said within this forum, but either way its an interesting one): where do these shocking black and white images come from? sure, they're flashbacks, but who's perception are we seeing these events from? from sonny and the lads, remembering the bad things they once did? OR perhaps, even more compellingly, from Richard? wouldn't it be interesting if these events never actually happened? if, in fact, richard was torturing himself with the thought of what might have happened. it changes the whole complexion of the film... watch the film again with this idea in mind and it makes for interesting viewing

OR perhaps, even more compellingly, from Richard? wouldn't it be interesting if these events never actually happened? That's a really interesting angle and something that I would never have thought of. I didn't question the flashback scenes and just accepted them as what had happened without even thinking about whose perception it was either. Interesting ...

I pretty much agree with the above and Anthony swinging is pretty harrowing.

The moment of realisation that Anthony is past-tense. Gut-dropping.
