Ha! Spooky or what? Just logged on briefly to post on the last movie thread and was goin' to post another 'where the f*ck is my DVD' message here! Alas, it has vanished into the ether. The PO-or whatever they're called these days-deny all knowledge and Amazon.ca are refusing to deal with my query/complaint until 12 weeks have elapsed. What the F*ck..... Anyhoo, I'm goin' to order another copy tonight. If the original turns up I'll donate it to the site as a prize-I'll let you decide the competition Edit: what's happened to Dokdrain and Rich?

Hello Folks !! I haven't been able to get time to use the computer for a while as we are undergoing serious renovations at the moment (Anybody remember Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer's "The Club" ? - I've got serious renovations ) Anyhoo, I managed to watch The Big Dirty for a second time last night and loved it. I won't go into details until Jill gets a chance to see it, but for me it's business as usual with the boys. One gripe I do have is that I thought most of the deleted scenes should have been left in the film. Hope you get a copy soon Jill and we can all have a proper natter about it.

Thanks, that's really considerate, but I wouldn't want to deny you the chance to discuss! I'll just keep away from the thread until my copy arrives.

Finally!!!! Watched it this morning. Thought there were a few flat bits here and there, but there were enough classic TPB moments to compensate.
SPOILER ALERT
Couple of highlights for me-Ricky apologizing to Cory and Trevor for making them cry in the middle of a robbery-surreal and Ricky and Lucy's vows!
Now for those deleted scenes...

FILM SPOILERS!
The film is great, and for the most part does feel as great as the TV series'. However, the following things let it down in my opinion.
The fact that they had to try and explain many of the characters traits in short explanatory scenes lead to scenes that didn't have the Trailer Park Boys feel to them. The Ray scene being the best example. He talks about being restricted to 'the chair' and then 'hilariously' gets up to clean off car and explain further about his welfare dodging. It's just not the kind of gag that Trailer Park Boys does, so it didn't fit for me. However, Ricky's explanatory scene was handled really well indeed... and features one of my fave shots.... the slow-mo bottling! haha The J-Roc deleted scene with all the "know'm sayin'" business really is terrible I thought. Glad it was cut. Really forced. Plus, what's happened to J-Roc's teeth! Extra white! Looked weird. Think Sarah had also been to the same dentist too.
Alot of the inventive swearing felt really forced sometimes. "Fuck giraffe"... although the more I hear it all, the more it seems to fit! haha
Trinity replaced by a younger girl. Very weird. I imagine they had no choice for some reason.
Breasts! As Ricky says "Everyone likes boobs", but for me, it felt at odds to the world of Trailer Park Boys to have lots of breast shots!
Anyway... those are my issues! It's still great though.
Was reading somewhere that there are shot references to A Clockwork Orange in the film. The main one being the slow motion pull-back shot in the white VIP room at the 'Gentleman's Club'. Someone else reckoned that the line-up scene in the jail is another reference.
Two of my fave lines that I currently remember:
"Officer Pineapple Cock and Fucky the Drunk Clown"
and when they are robbing the cash machine and Ricky is handling the pressurised blue ink cartridge, Bubbles says something like: "Careful Ricky. If that cocksucker blows we'll end up looking like those blue bald-headed dicks that beat the drums!"

At last you get to write your review Dave OK here's my thoughts..... SPOILER ALERT I really enjoyed the first 15 minutes or so-up to the point where the boys are released from jail. For quite a long time (15 mins or so) after that I was a bit disappointed by it to be honest. But then I decided that the film had been made-in part at least-with the aim of attracting a new audience, rather than for existing fans. After that, I was satisfied to just enjoy the classic TPB moments and not let the other stuff spoil it. The disappointing bits for me, were: The amount of time they devoted to the little back stories- I/we know all this stuff so it's a wee bit irritating to sit through, but then of course TPB virgins probably need this, so fair enough. Mike Clattenberg must have been aiming/hoping to get a distribution deal outside Canada (can’t blame ‘em for that), I would have thought, but that presents a real problem/challenge since, as we've said many times before on this thread, it takes maybe 3 or 4 episodes minimum to 'get' TPB. The show's magic because the characters are magic and the secret of its appeal is not necessarily story lines or sparkling dialogue (although there are plenty of little gems in the exchanges and banter) but in the whole family/community/love vibe. How do you convey that in 90 mins? This for me explains the choice of sub-plots. But making the Lucy/Ricky relationship so central to the film didn't really work for me. This was partly because the film failed to convey just how calculating Lucy is-so it largely failed to evoke sympathy for Ricky ( and show his genuine and vulnerable side). I would have much preferred the sub plots be used as devices to show how the relationship between the boys works. The Bubble's shed story was much better, although I think it was a mistake to make Lahey so mean-he would more likely knock down the shed by accident when pissed. I thought that they 'lifted' or re-worked quite a lot of bits from earlier shows (eg. Lucy not wanting Ricky to work with Julian, Sarah doing her best to keep them apart, and quite a few other bits) Finally, I agree with you Dave about the boobs, but would go further. I couldn't see the point of Julian's relationship with the lap dancer at all, except as an opportunity to stuff the film with eye candy-which, again, is not what TPB is about. And what was the Sarah/Lucy tryst about? I wondered if maybe they were going for a teenage lads audience?? So, these were the negatives for me, but as I said I tried not to let it spoil it. There were plenty of positives. I thought that the decision to make Ricky the central character was entirely right, even if it was at the expense of other characters. Robb Wells was brilliant (as ever) and the Rickyisms worked for me. The deaf/mute blag was hilarious I thought. The moment in the cinema when Julian first spies the coin ball was classic. Laheys backward walk to his car draining a quart was great and there were a few splendid Bubble's moments. It was a bit strange being confronted with a different Trin, but I thought the young girl was actually pretty good, which reminds me of another great line: 'Trin go get the car, bring it round the front...and check the oil.' Didn't notice the homage to Clockwork Orange, but wasn't looking for it. So overall, given the challenges involved, I thought it was pretty good. Didn't measure up to classics like Conky, but good enough-made me laugh quite a bit and felt better for getting another TPB fix!

FILM SPOILERS OF COURSE!
Jill... first the boobs, then you bring up Julian's lap-dancing girlfriend, and it reminded me that straight after watching it for the first time I thought the whole 'Gentleman's Club' wasn't needed at all. Took us out of the trailer park too much, and was not very good in terms of being 'Trailer Park Boys-esque'. They have of course visited strip clubs in the series, but it was done with class! haha
On second view, I was happier knowing what was coming, and I also didn't let the gripes I had sully my enjoyment.
There is so much to like though. Despite Julian's lap-dancer girlfriend and the 'gentlemans club' owner, the one new character that was really good was Donny the prison warden(?). I liked him enough from this film appearance to want to see more of him in the series. Probably not likely though.
Jill... like you mentioned, the story re-visited ideas that had been used in the series. To me, the film seems to exist outside of the series time-line completely. I don't think it fits anywhere. Not to be boob fixated (or boob nervous), but Lucy had a boob job in about series 3 or 4! Weird she has another one in the film. Doesn't fit any time-line.

Yeah, hadn't thought about the discontinuities..but you're completely right. Just watched the extras, plus about a third of the commentary. Seems that it was the producer who wanted Lucy/Ricky to be a major story and he wanted it to draw upon the early stuff (hence the reworking of a lot that's familiar to us). The idea was, of course, to appeal to a fresh audience. Clattenberg wanted to start with Ricky, Julian and Bubbles as kids. That would have been better, I think, but I suppose Directors ultimately have to bow to Producers on these things. Pity, but like you, it didn't entirely spoil my enjoyment of it.
The commentary also revealed that Jacob will be a major character in season 7 which answers our questions about who's going to fill the gap left by the departure of Cory and Trevster. Didn't notice he was in it!
Dokdrain, I also liked many of the deleted scenes. My son-a massive fan of the show - also thinks many deleted scenes were better that what eventually stayed in.

The commentary also revealed that Jacob will be a major character in season 7 which answers our questions about who's going to fill the gap left by the departure of Cory and Trevster. Didn't notice he was in it! Jacob was working at the cinema in the film. I recall seeing him twice.... Jacob turfing Julian and Wanda out of the lavs..... and then when Ricky kicks off 'The Big Dirty', he man-handles Jacob behind the counter. Listened to about half the commentary myself now. Also great to hear that the actor Phil Collins (no.. not that one! Weird how there's been a Phil Collins and a Michael Jackson in Trailer Park Boys for so long) also is a major character in season 7. Phil Collins is the guy with the huge gut.... he owned a motel when he first appeared in the series. Is his character name Phil? Oh yeah... interesting to hear about the cops that pull the boys over at the beginning are cameos. I have no idea who one of the guys is, even when named (a Canadian band member I believe), but the other one is Alex Lifeson from Rush! Looks nothing like him with the amazing tash! He's the same member of Rush that gets kidnapped in the series. The other guy who I don't know at all... well I think on the commentary it mentions that the music playing when we first cut to the jail scenes is music by that guys band.

I've just finished work, there's nothing on the telly and I'm very, very bored.............so, here's a 'small world' challenge for you; Shane to Conky in the fewest credible moves. I did it in 4. Beat that!! Edit: does my life have a point I wonder? Edit 2: Did you know, you can link the entire cast of TIE to Kevin Bacon in 3 moves? I know....as the delightful Courtney Love once said; 'somebody kill me'

But what are the criteria for the links Jill? Conky isn't even in a film!
Is it connection by actors only?
Just been watching some early TPBs again. The Bible Pimp episode! What a corker that is!
"The Roc-pile up in this ma!"

"The Roc-pile up in this ma!" To paraphrase: I don't f*ckin' know......I was drunk!! Nah, just seriously bored. Sorry. But the 'small world' thing is kinda spooky . Just 'credible' links Dave (i.e through films/tv) and, yes, Conky isn't in a film, but he is on the screen............. I know this sounds (and is) pretty daft, but Bible Pimp really moves me......'you're just a dirty TPB.'. Arghh, a gentle heart is broken....Sob
