You seen MBV before? I bet you have but i'll mention they're SPECTACULAR LIVE anyway. Spiritualised, missed out on there tour this year GUTTED. No. I missed out on MBV last time. I just hate paying stuff like £40 for a ticket to be honest. I don't think any band could make me part with that much for one performance. I think it's too being used to paying a wee bit more to watch dozens of other bands in the same place which is why I like going there. I saw Spiritualized doing the acoustic mainline thing at Primavera in 2007. If that's anything to go by, a full-on band, backing show by them is going to make my teeth tingle.

The 20 min HOLOCAUST at the end of the gig felt like being in a plane and the hatch opening, or having a building fall down around you, it was that loud... amazing. You'll love it. Did he do any Spacemen 3 wheat? Salv, the two guys I'm going to were at edinburgh when you were, I was working...

Metallica with Machine Head supporting last night at the MEN Arena Manchester. I still feel very very rough after spending most of the gig in the pit (starting a lot of it) and crowd surfing (until i eventually went over the barrier!). Machine Head were a little disapointing mostly down to sound set up and early start time. Metallica were amazing i was worried they would be 'going through the motions' but i was so wrong. It had been 15 years since i'd seen them last ('93 G-Mex) and despite being a little older and a little fatter (yes me too!) they still have what it takes to send a crowd wild.

Oh yes. OH YES! Getthefuckin. The first announcement on the lineup for Primavera '09 in Barcelona has come out... My Bloody Valentine. Spiritualized. The Vaselines. Oh god. I think I just did a little excitement wee. Even the shit Euro rate has not dampened anything for me, it'll be amazing. And the majority of the rest of the lineup is out. Off top of me head... Jarvis Cocker Aphex Twin Sonic Youth Yo La Tengo Bloc Party Art Brut A Certain Ratio Shellac Neil Young (Neil fucking Young!) And a raker of other bands like the Mae Shi, Crystal Stilts, The Pains Of being Pure At Heart Who I'm just getting into. God I can't wait til May!

Sonic Youth are EXCELLENT live!
Went and saw Spectrum last night, Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) from Spacemen 3's band and was blown away, stood in front of him the whole set just in awe, and met him outside before the gig. Legend.

Yeah, seen Sonic Youth numerous times and agree. Also, Spectrum are playing Primavera too so I'll be sure to catch that one!

So, I've managed to see Dylan before I die (or he dies maybe). Sadly, that's about the most positive thing I can say about the gig. Dylan is pretty famous/imfamous for his 'I don't give a sh*t about the audience' attitude-not good, but since he one of the foremost cultural icons of the twentieth century, I guess he's earned the right to indifference. Would it have killed him to say 'hello' though? On the official merchandising, Dylan is wearing a white Fedora. He wore it on stage, which was useful because it meant that he could be easily spotted standing behind the keyboard player all night. The most disappointing thing was the actual performance though. The arrangements were, I suspect, arrived at with Dylan's advanced years in mind, but-oh dear-honestly most songs were indistinguisable-sounded like generic, easy listening airport lounge music. Imagine Mike Flowers Pops covering Desolation Row and you'll get a flavour of what I mean. A notable exception was Ballad of a Thin Man, which sounded something like the original and was-for me-the highlight of the evening. So Dylan can't sing too good these days. So what. His lyrics are poetry-to be honest, I would have preferred to hear him recite them than listen to this. I guess it's testimony of sorts that I'm still glad I went, but 'disappointing' is some under statement

Gonna see Riding the Low tomorrow night (tonight technically).
They are playing at a small pub nearby, quite intimate venue.
I'm guessing they will be awesome, as you would expect

A few mates of mine are in a band (Youves, used to be Mirror! Mirror!) who are on the same label as Rolo Tomassi. Or they toured with them. I canny remember which. One of them anyway.

Wednesday night I got to see Jonathan Richman at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines -- this was the 7th gig of his that I've seen, and the first I've seen in Iowa. (5 of the others I'd seen were in Nebraska, and one was in Missouri.)
A fairly typical gig: Jonathan (on guitar and percussion) was loose, funny and charming as always -- even cracking a joke in the middle of "He Gave Us The Wine To Taste" -- and he often embellished his songs with instrumental solos, sexy dancing, and altered or added lyrics (for instance, he could take a 2-minute ditty like "The Night Is Still Young" and stretch it out to at least three times as long). The played for a good hour-and-a-half, and both he and his bandmate Tommy (on drums) seemed in high spirits throughout. All in all, a great night! ;D

Went to see Eddi Reader at Innerleithen Folk Music Festival a couple of weeks ago, she was fantastic! She has the most incredible voice (one of those rare singers who possibly actually sounds better live than on CD), and she had a great sense of humour too. It's great that someone as well known as she is is willing to play a small Town Hall venue.
