Someone at work told me about a band called Zu... they then mentioned that Mike Patton features on their new album. I became interested!
Their new album is called Carboniferous and it's rather brilliant. Spotify describe the band as: "An avant-garde jazz and rock trio out of Rome, Italy."
They are instrumentalists, and the band comprises of just a a drummer, a bassist and a saxophonist.
I'm not sure about their previous albums (they've been going for years apparently) but this new album is quite a stomping and heavy affair. Sounds a bit like an instrumental Meshhugah crossed with early Melvins (but then you already knew that).
Here's a highlight on YouTube:

Mogwai - Mr Beast (said a little about it in the Top Albums thread) Its brilliant. City and Colour - Bring Me Your Love - Dallas Green's (of Alexisonfire) second solo album. he has an excellent voice, coupled with catchy riffs and heartfelt lyrics, this is a brilliant album. Tracks are a bit samey, but there's not much of it to get sick of. A really nice little chilled out listen. Newton Faulkner - Rebuilt By Humans - Pretty much very similar to the first album, which was uplifting brilliance. A really good fun album to listen to. He's a bit of a hippy though. Poison The Well - You Before You - Hailed as their best album by many it seems. I can see why, it's bloody fantastic. Taking me a while to get fully into it but that's fine. Would be better if it had a slow song or two, but this is stunning metal. "Ghostchant" and "Apathy is a Cold Body" are the faves at the moment.

Woohoo! The new Between the Buried and Me abum, "The Great Misdirect" is out, and once again, they've given me plenty of homework to do!
There are only six tracks on the album, but then 4 of them break the ten minute barrier (the final track "Swim to the Moon" nearly breaking the 18 minute barrier), so it certainly isn't a short album.
At the moment, I am only totally familiar with the first two tracks on the album because they had been leaked onto the web about a month ago.
On first listen of the album, it is seems to be embracing even more non-metal directions than before. Track five, "Desert of song" sounds even a bit Pink Floyd. They've certainly embraced their own diverse musical tastes to greater extent this time, and works wonders.
Looking forward to listening to this album over and over again, and getting to grips with all the gargantuan twisty, turny, proggy tracks. "Swim to the Moon" is going to take some digesting! Thankfully I think I'll be able to grasp it all a bit quicker than last time. The learning curve on their "Colors" album was almost vertical, but now I have it all neatly stored in my brain and it has given me the mndset I need for "The Great Misdirect".
Has Deadmansrockports got it yet I wonder. He's the only other fan on this band on here as far as I know.
Here's the mellow opening track called "Mirrors"

I just got the the new Between the Buried and Me album in the post today... blummin' Royal Mail. I have no idea how I have been listening to the album before I got hold of it! I had to get the 'deluxe' edition which comes with a 'Making Of' DVD. It's pretty good. 45 minutes long and mostly interesting. Most interesting of all though is that the DVD is double-sided. Not seen one of those for a while. Side 2 is a 5.1 audio mix of the album! Prog heaven! ;D Trouble is, I non longer have a surround sound system (I just found it a bit annoying to be honest, and is little more than a novelty akin to bloody 3D). But I have a plan.... I'll have to try and organise time to use a cinema screen at work and sit in the middle of the auditorium.... in the dark and go on a prog journey of obsessive proportions!

When you guys get to know me a little better (which will happen rather fast, methinks ), you'll find out I have a rather eclectic taste in music. It's sort of...all over the place. Can't stick to only one thing, it's like eating only one flavour of ice cream your whole life!! I just got the new release of one of my favourite bands, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble "Here Be Dragons", which made me just listen to everything I have of theirs as it's just weather-perfect at the moment. Snow hasn't come to Stockholm yet, so it's just grey and miserable, and this band really suits sad rainy weather. It's hard to describe what they do, but the "Darkjazz" part of their name sounds pretty good as a description. If you know Bohren & der Club of Gore, you'll take to this too. If you like slow, dark stuff, and the weather's shitty where you are, click the link and see if this is something for you:

For the past FOUR weeks I've been completely and utterly seduced by this song, by Atlas Sound featuring Noah Lennox (Panda Bear / Animal Collective). Spotters badge for those who know what song it's sampled.

Been listening to Porcupine Tree. Errrm, not bad. The music is epic and very good. The lyrics however are awful. Ignore the lyrics and its actually rather good. Very long songs, which I like. I'd have to concur here...I put Porcupine Tree as one of my favourite bands, but I don't like all their albums (or there'd be an album I otherwise would have loved if they hadn't included a song so insipid that I'm almost inclined to collapse in a full-on Kinski rant). So with me, the can be a bit hit and miss, but when they hit, they do it goooood. And yeah, sometimes bad lyrics (but I'm hardly Miss Innocent in that regard... *cough* ). So I still list them as a favourite.

I got the New Biffy Clyro album when it was released a few weeks ago and liked it. After a break of a week or more, I've gone back to it and now enjoy it much more than before. Bonus! I also just found a video on YouTube of Between the Buried and Me clips. It's pretty much a collection of their more melodic and virtuoso moments, so there's no need to fear the metal! The opening clip from the album (and track) Alaska is the heaviest bit that the person has put into their compilation. I love Between the Buried and Me.... definitely my favourite band now. Their music is rich like Christmas pudding! ;D

Dave, do you like melodic hardcore? Not particularly... I used to like it more than I do now. I'm more into proggy metal and hardcore! haha There's not that much about though that I like. If you're not familiar with Between the Buried and Me, they mostly sound like..... They just brilliantly incorporate the subtler moments to great effect. Talented!? I should say so! haha

Also Chrome has just linked me to download some Scorz-zay-zee tunes. Just listneing. Very good! The man's a poet. Scor-Zay-Zee's released some tracks for free. It appears to be a prelude to his proper album due out next year. I'm no hip hop aficionado but the way he uses words is genuinely captivating and moving. Gotta say, I love his accent too. Download them from here... getnottz.blogspot.com/2009/12/scorzayzee-starter_11.htmlThere's real soul here. Really looking forward to Peace to the Puzzle now.
