Fuddled - Harry Potter meets the Elephant Man. Is that one a joke? I'm pretty sure it isn't. Shane's mate Paul Fraser has written it.

Sweet Maria gets my vote but if we are going for something else I would love to see you adapt The Damned United, a novel by Dave Peace, I've heard that Stephen Frears is sniffing around it but here's why I think it has to be done by Sir Meadows.
1. Half of the book is set in Derby, about normal Derby folk. Meadows 1 Frears 0. 2. The central character Brian Clough, has to be shown as the difficult bugger he was but at the same time it calls for him to be shown in a compassionate light SM has shown time and time again that he can bring these contrasts to his characters. 2-0 3. Paddy would make an awesome Don Revie 3-0. 4. Having done such a good job showing England in the early 80's 1974 Leeds will be a walk in the park. 4-0 5. Cloughie's northern humour was brilliant and often off the cuff. Whose films capture that type of humour better Meadows or Frears? 5-0
I should state I'm not knocking Stephen Frears, I really like some of his work, (there is only one English film director I would happily slag off, but woun't for fear of getting kicked off this site) but this book is brilliant and would be an awseome Shane Meadows film.
Sorry thats quite long winded and I have no idea if you even like football.

Yeah share with us who you hate.
I'll tell you these get most of the attention and most do not deserve it...
Nick Love - Poor. Danny Boyle - Overrated. Michael Winterbottom - Overrated, Gurinder Chadha - Poor and Very Overrated.
The best british directors for me are...
Ken Loach Mike Leigh Shane Meadows Alan Clarke and there could well be a promising future for Paul Andrew Williams and Paddy Considine.

.....is it Loach you hate? tell us....he doesnt like football, have you seen the team he supports? Ha ha.. brings back memories. Working at the Robins Cinema, Mr Loach ran off a silent 35mm advert for us to play before films. It was just text banging on about Bath City football club and the cost of match and season tickets. We even had money off vouchers for Bath City for a while.

I'll tell you these get most of the attention and most do not deserve it... But it wasn't decided at random. Nick Love and Danny Boyle's films appeal to a larger audience because more people like them. Could say that's because of a lowest common denominator factor or whatever, I suppose.

Or maybe because they have more money flung at their films to advertise them?

Hi guys since I posted yesterday I've had a bit of a read around the site and Shane does mention David Peace. So here is hoping!
Shane if you’re online. Have you read Damned United?
I understand it may throw up the same type of problems that King of the Gypsies has in terms of how do you get the money you need without making sacrifices in terms of control and the overall vision.
Brian Clough would have just started it and then gone fuck off we’re doing it may way and if you don’t like that then I’m going home and everyone is coming with me.
Ok, I’ve been coaxed into it. The one British director I hate is Nick Love (despite his use of Frank Harper and Goodbye Charlie Bright – a half decent film).
He makes what I call FHM films; they are all gloss and absolutely no substance. They have no depth, little tension and for the most part actually fail to be about anything.
I have met the guy (I felt this way before it’s not like he upset me and so I’m dissing him) and was shocked at his arrogance. He really believes he is doing something so much better than all of the other directors in the UK, when the truth is that he isn’t a patch on SM, Mike Leigh and actually half the bloody television directors in the country.

No surprise from me there mate. He comes across as a bit of a numpty or as he might say...
'a maggy little kahnt.'
Goodbye Charlie Bright. I haven't watched it in a long time, but it didn't stay with me. Except that there was guns and the vicar from Eastenders involved and it being fairly poor.
Football Factory. Appalling like a 12 year olds school project. Only looks average when compared with Green Street. Has actually killed the scene it portrays too.
The Business. Everyone I know seems to like this. Yet I find it awful. Like a paid for holiday for the boys and they've taken a camera with them. Garbage!
Outlaw. Again plays out like it's been written and done by a 14 year old.....badly. Danny Dire again. I weep.
Shane Meadows himself actually said he'd worked on a small budget and done well with it. But I think the actual films themselves are as you say FHM films. Plus they are borrowed and copied of much better, thrown together for 'non-film' watching people to like and enjoy.
The thing is the directors I've mentioned as not liking all that much have all made poor films and some the odd decent film. Michael Winterbottom made 24 Hour Party People which was okay but overrated. He then made two utter shite films in 9 Songs and that Tristram Shandy wank.
Danny Boyle - Shallow Grave and Trainspotting were good I think he's gone downhill since those. I thought 28 Days later for all the hype it received was an amateur piece of muck. Gurinder Chadha She made Bend it like fucking Beckham, some other tat and it lauded as an acclaimed director. Why?
Whats important and stands out for me is every Shane Meadows film is at its worst rather bloddy good. I think he shows up most of the current British directors and could teach some a thing or two.

Hi Dilarge,
Agree with you mate though I've never seen a Gurinda Chadha movie (so can't comment) and I really like Wonderland so feel a bit bad knocking Winterbottom. Glad you mention Alan Clarke as a top director because for me that’s the man Nick Love should watch if he wants to make movies about 'being hard'.
Would like to add a 'one for the future' to your top director list. Tom Shkolnik. You won’t have heard of him yet but you will do. He came to London as a student a few years ago having been an editor in Israel. He made two short films that were out of this world, they got passed round and ended up with Mike Leigh who said they were some of the most exciting bits of work he had seen in years. Mike Leigh then asked him to be his assistant on Two thousand years (a play at the national). Tom started but then his student Visa ran out. He was going to have to leave the UK but Mike Leigh, Anthony Mingella and loads of other big people appealed on his behalf. He now has some sort of visa that they give out for talented workers.
Channel Four then asked him to do a project (low budget) but he turned round and said only if he didn’t have to submit a script before (all his stuff is improvised) and he would have final cut and all that stuff. They said yes and he is just about to finish it. Don’t know much about it but it will be the nuts I bet you.
